Documents/releases for local/school newsletters?

Does anyone have sample documents to use to help publicize their event through local and school newsletters?  Most of the items I saw in the library were for larger documents, but space availability in the newsletters is going to be an issue.

Please let me know if you have any ideas, etc...

Thanks!

Get the Word Out

Traditional Marketing:  TV, newspapers, local magazines, radio stations, billboards (Lamar will donate empty billboards), word of mouth (power of purple day), flyers/brochures.

Get a videographer to volunteer to film Relay and put together a DVD to be used the next year for marketing.

Door prizes at team captain meetings.  Can get purple ribbons at papermart.com

Put Relay cards in halloween candy bags.

State-of-Art Marketing

Relay online, online networking like Facebook, myspace, twitter, linkedIn, youtube; text messaging; craig's list; virtual Relay For Life (second life on rfl.org), MSN alerts through ACS; wiggio.com

Grassroots Marketing:  local, basics, one-on-one.  ACS Mission statement (read at every meeting); ACS Cancer Action Network; Join Birthday campaign.  Use people to spell HOPE at local park and invite media to cover it.

Attracting Media to Your Relay

I'm looking for some different ideas and suggestions to attract media outlets to a Relay.  What things in your community work to get the media out and cover the event?  Thank you.

Newspaper ads

this was my first year in  the publicity chair and I didn't have anyone on the committee, so advertising for the event really ended up on our community person's lap.  I would love to do something different and better next year, and have some ideas but would like to see other newspaper ads for Relay and for the auction.  Our paper donated 1/2 page and a local lawyer donated an ad of the items for the auction- which is great but I would like to see a bigger ad to get out siders in to the auction and more $.

You can email the ads to me at lsnider@alumni.jmu.edu

Thanks

Lisa

Press release for Md. events -

Public relations volunteers in Maryland can use the following press release to help garner media attention for their events.  Share with your community newspapers and offer them an opportunity to come to your event and speak with advocacy volunteers about why the legislation is important to Maryland residents!

Freelance Photographer looking for an opportunity at the Pullman Relay

Hello, everyone.

Brief introduction: My family has been involved in the Relay for many years.  Last I heard, they've raised 300+% of their goal for this year.  I've got some great plans on how to boost that number way above that for next year, as well :)

I've spent some time working as a freelance photojournalist.  I'm interested in covering tonight's Relay (in Pullman, WA) as a photojournalist.

Question about radio remotes

We have been fortunate to secure a sponsorship from a local radio station who is willing to do a live remote at our event as well as pre-event promotion of our May Day for Relay activities and our team fundraisers.  This is our first time to have a live remote and I am interested in hearing about any other relays that have used one before - what is the best way to get the most use from this?  We are looking at having them for about 1 hour before the event starts for interviews and information an then to cover about an hour of the opening of the event.  Please share any success stories or best practices.

Thank you,

Sharon Lohan
