How Are You Promoting ACS CAN at your local Relay?

Remember the Wall of Hope that was signed and sent to Washington DC for Celebration on the Hill 2006?  Are you doing anything similar?  Different?  Please share your suggestions or ideas on what you're doing or what others can do that allows people to take action and learn more about ACS CAN...and can also be used to demonstrate to our elected officials that we care about cancer and our voices will be heard.

Games at Relay

I am a new advocacy chair that started last month. Our relay is at the end of the month and I am looking for differnet games that I can do to help with Advocacy. I have a tent and need to come up with some ideas. Obviously, the theme for this relay is "pass the buck". I will have bucks and putting relay stickers on the back but I need a game for this idea. Any ideas????

Thank you in advance!

Youth & Advocacy

I am the youth development chair at my relay and I am trying to brainstorm issues/topics of advocacy & mission that would be of interest to high school age youth. As well as helping the kids organize fundraising & getting more kids involved, I think it would be really awesome to do a couple cancer awareness events/activities in the schools. Right now all I am brainstorming is a "go pale to prom" campaign, talking about safe sun/tanning bed habits. Also the obvious "no smoking" campaign is an issue that affects youth as well. Any other specific prevention campaigns/habits/topics that you all can think of? Thanks in advance!

Games and Pit Stops

Hey everyone -

I am trying to put together games and pit stops related to Mission Delivery and Advocacy for our Relay on May 31.  Any ideas or suggestions?  I want to give my captains the game idea, the reason why this is important to RFL, Mission Delivery and Advocacy and tie that in with brochures and such.  We have the games at each team camp and then people go from site to site and have their passport stamped.

Thanks for any help.

Advocacy ideas?

I have had several volunteers say that Advocacy ideas are hard to come by... What ideas do you have?  Here are a few that other volunteers have shared:

<!--[if !supportLists]-->·          <!--[endif]-->Have Celebration on the Hill Ambassadors(s) & Survivors impacted by advocacy/gov’t relations attend Relay For Life events and speak – Have COTH ambassadors speak about their firsthand experience with Advocacy and its impact on them  Have survivor speak or talk about Advocacy/Government relations and the critical role everyone plays in securing the passage of cancer related legislation

Please also help the Reeve Foundation

Tomorrow is Grassroots Call-In Day:
Make a phone call to get the CRPA passed!

The next few days and weeks represent our final opportunity to have the Christopher Reeve Paralysis Act (CRPA) passed this Congress. On November 16, a grassroots coalition of advocates like you—people affected by paralysis—will be visiting Capitol Hill. Their mission is to persuade the chairmen of both committees to move the CRPA out of committee, before the end of the 109th Congress.

You can provide GREAT support to these volunteer patient advocates by making a simple phone call to each of the four committee chairs whose numbers are listed below.

Advocacy at Relay

At the LaGrange County Relay for Life in LaGrange, IN in June, we held a Health and Wellness Fair to promote good health in our community. We had nutritionist, hospital, skin care, blood pressure checks, massage therapist and tables with health information from other people in the community. We had seminars about how to do self breast exams, nutrition and skin care seminars. We also held a Slip, Slop, Slap relay type race to promote sunscreen safety and we also had a lot of sunscreen samples donated by many sunscreen companies as well as a few hospitals. I would love to hear what other events are doing for Advocacy.
