Team and Event Themes/Names

One of the most frequent questions on the old cancer.org discussion board was for team and event theme ideas - for example, your event theme could be "The Nifty 50 United States" (like the kids' song), and each team could have a state for their theme...  There are less and more complicated versions, and some events don’t really have an event theme at all that determines what "topic" team themes/names should be.

In any case, below are some Event Themes and Team Themes from the last several years of posts n cancer.org - hope this is helpful!

Team Captain Kick Off

We are trying to plan a team captain kick off next week, but i am not sure what the ratio of education and mingling should be.  i want people to come, have a nice time, get excited about Relay but I don't want it to be a sit down structured event.

Casual.

Any suggestions?

So far we have a place for it to happen, we have gotten the word out, we have decorations and information to hand out...and music...but what should I do there as the Team Chair to reach them all without making them sit down and shut up?  hahaha

we are expecting roughly 50 people at the event.

Thanks for any input.

Starting new team

Hi, everyone! I am a first time captain and a first time relayer. After the loss of my sister-in-law this year, I felt this was a good way to honor her. I am having trouble coming up with a team name. It will be mostly family members and close friends. Her name was Tiffany Hart, and I would like to come up with something using either her first or last name.  Also is there anyone in the Biloxi,MS area that could help me get some info to get started. I called our local chapter and was given a  local website but it only brings me back to this site. Thanks for the help.

Starting New Team - Please Help

I am starting a new relay for life team and I don't really know where to start. I am having trouble coming up with a group name. I want the name to be something based off of the movie Dreamgirls or about cards (or card games) or bingo. Also, my town usually had an event but i don't see it online, does that mean they are not going to have one this year? Thanks in Advanced

Captain Boot Camp Idea

I would love to hear from anyone if they have ever implemented a Boot Camp for Team Captains? I know this web-site has great things for team captains to look up and find and even chat or track about information but sometimes people need a more personal hands on experience.

I've noticed over the years that alot of new teams join at all times of our Relay Season. It's not easy to try to catch up and understand what is going on. Most captain meetings are short and can only get out so much information without overwhelming you. This year we had 109 teams. It was hard for our Team Captain Coordinator to try to give individual service to the new teams while still trying to keep the meetings on time and fun.

My plan was to have a 2-hour Boot Camp, happening about 2-3 times year. The Camp would be divided between 2 classes. Team Captains can sign up for which class they feel they need or can attend. This did not replace captain meetings, only to give more personalized help to those who need it.

Recruiting Team Members

I am stepping up from team member to Team Co-leader for the next year.  My team is at the Middle School where I teach.  I was so disappointed this year (in a new district, at a new school) to see so few people involved with our team, and I'm hoping to add some things to next year's calendar so we can be a bit more active from the start.

What advice do you all have for recruiting team members when the general "It's for a good cause and we have a blast" line just doesn't cut it?

 Thanks in advance!!  Smile

Wagner College

Hi,

I was about to register my team for the Relay for Life at Wagner College, but the event is not coming up in the search results.  I've gone for two years now, so I know it exists.  Does anyone know if it's been cancelled?

Relay for Life Tent Ideas

Our theme for this year is "Making cancer history."  Our team is the "tumornators" and we are trying to think of THE BEST tent theme possible.  Any clever and fun ideas?  thanks!

struggling to recruit

This is Heather from Reno/Sparks Relay in Nevada and I was wondering how other Relays are doing with teams.  Our Relay is struggling quite a bit and we think it is because of the ecenomy but I would like to think that we can overcome it.  If other Relays aren't struggling, then we know it's us.  We are having a hard time getting teams (our goal is 120, we had 89 last year, and we are at 36 with 2 months to go) and we are far from our fundraising goal.  Any input from others would be greatly appreciated.  No matter what, I know we'll have a great Relay, but we need things to pick up.

Thanks!
