I am hoping to start a year-round survivor involvment program in our area. If there is ANYONE OUT THERE WHO HAS THIS......PLEASE SEND SUGGESTIONS!!!! I'm just a crazy lady with a BIG DREAM, and am not to proud to beg for help!!! I'm going to have a questionaire at the sign-in for the relay, to get an idea of how many participants would be interested and get some ideas of what they would like to do. That's a start, but I could use some expert guidance from there! I have my person who works with the corporate donations, checking on if there would be any businesses that would sponsor an event during the year. HELP!!!!!!
A lot of these might seem, obvious, but figure it never hurts to check:
· Look for Survivors at the Locations that they Frequent - Place Relay Information at hospitals, doctor’s offices, support groups, pharmacies, etc. Those locales have high survivor traffic. Keep a list of places like that around town.
· Ask the Survivors you have on what survivor related groups they are exposed to – Doctors, Support groups, etc. – have them take information to those places.
· Search online for local support groups and other Cancer-related groups that might be interested – Support groups or other organizations will often have websites or on-line info.
· Have local hospitals put info in their cancer wards about Relay and your survivor reception and ongoing actvities for survivors
· Advertise for survivors in the “Community Section” of your local newspaper or Penny Saver – these ads are free, usually.
· Contact the following resources:
· ACS Speaker Bureau – they will know survivors – some may be in your area!
· Reach to Recovery program
· Cancer Survivor Support Group – have them talk at a team captain’s meeting or the event to build a relationship with them.
· Cancer Survivor Network
· Have each survivor bring a friend who is also a survivor to whatever survivorship activity you have planned – Survivors often know others who have also battled cancer… Ask them to invite friends to a team captain’s meeting, kickoff, or the event!
· Survivor Interest Story in the Newspaper – could you get an article in the local newspaper about the fact that you are doing this?

Survivor Involvement Program
Hiya!
This is a great idea; and really, the sky's the limit as far as what you can do with this. You are very creative and I'm sure you have tons of ideas. A friend of mine has a women's group. The women are not cancer survivors, but I think the idea can work for you. Each month they get together and do craft stuff, make dinners, etc.
You might want to look into Meetup.com as a way of connecting with survivors. One group in my local area (not necessarily survivors) is the Know Cancer Project. This group distributes cancer related information.
Having a survivors' group is also a great way to introduce Relay to those who don't know about it -- Is that even possible? Not know about Relay??? So think outside the box in recruiting members.
Let me know if I can help. You can always email me at trish.snyder@gmail.com. I also am on a few IM's. Just look at my profile to find which ones.

Program
Thanks again Trish for your great suggestions!! I will copy it and pass it on to my ACS person, who will work on this with me. Yes, I have TONS of ideas, but we'll just have to take it one step at a time. We deffinately want to make sure that the newly diagnosed are sure to be included. It's very important that they know that we are here for them and that there are some great programs out there. I enjoy meeting with fellow survivors and just letting it all hang out, so to speak.
I'll keep you up to date, as things progress and maybe more towns will start this also!
Cindy
