Our Relay is celebrating its 14th year.  The Relay has seen its popularity decrease over the last five years in our community.

To try and change that, our Relay is having a Family Fun Fest between 1-5 p.m. on the Saturday afternoon of Relay.

It's geared towards families of elementary-aged kids.

We've got magic shows, games, crafts, mini-golf, batting cages, music, one of the local TV meteorologists is performing his ventriloquist act.  We've invited mascots from around the region to attend.  Our local women's football team is coming.  One of the local minor league baseball teams will be there.

It's sort of a way to let families see what Relay is all about.  The families with elementary kids probably weren't involved with Relay since the Relay here started before their children were born.  So hopefully this event will let them see what this is all about.

family fun fest

We did something like this last year, it went very well, we sent out invites from the school and invited all familes to attend, but asked for the kids to all be there at 3 PM

At that time everyone left the track, and the kids had a parade, complete with a banner that said "each small step brings us closer to the cure" They "relayed" for 24 mins.

It was ahuge hit and has now worked into the event as a regular activity, this year classes (or grade levels) are event making Wagon Floats to pull in their parade

the school class that raises the most gets bragging rights and they get to be first in line for the giant water balloon fight

I love it! Do you happen to have any photos of that event you could share?

What a wonderful idea! Please let us know how it went. Your event is fairly soon, if I remember correctly.

How did it go?

How did the Family Fun Fest go?  Can you share any documents (schedule, invitations, prizes, etc) that were used?  I think my home-town Relay could use something like that this year.

Family Fun Fest summary

Hey folks...

Jeff asked if I'd leave an update about the Moon Relay's Family Fun Fest. There's some of a review on my original blog post about it but I'll give more here.

Here's how it started... an elementary teacher at one of the schools in the local district wanted to get her school involved but didn't think people would go for walking 24 hours. So she asked if they could have a lap time -- at 3 p.m. -- to walk the track so everyone could see that the students and teachers helped. She wanted it to be a lap for all the teams, too.

So I figured we'd need events to get families there. It started with the teacher suggesting exercise activities -- jumping rope, etc.

A local TV meteorologist has a ventriloquist act that he does to groups and schools. We invited him to perform. His performance wasn't well-received by the crowd, though. So that was kind of sad.

We also invited area mascots. We got a minor league baseball team to appear -- the Slippery Rock Sliders. They stayed for at least an hour.

We had invited the local women's football team, the Pittsburgh Passion (the women's football champions!!!), but they had a previous engagement I believe.

The Pittsburgh Pirates could not send Pirate Parrot so instead a very nice lady in their marketing office decided to raffle off a chance to win Pirate Parrot at an event! It worked out well!

Teams did magic shows, coloring contests, bake sales and various games for children, too. Some groups did face painting.

I really wish I got a head count of children but as you know it's too hard to count at Relay.

But when we did the Lap of Champions, the elementary group was the biggest!

There are four other elementary schools in the Relay area (three others in the one district and one in the other). We're trying to expand it to all the schools. But to do that, we'll need at least one representative from each school (a teacher, parent, etc.) to help us organize and spread the word.

So far, two elementary schools are on board for next year.

If you want to see our flier that we used, let me know! Send me an e-mail at MoonRelay@gmail.com and I'll reply with our fliers.

I should note that the elementary school that was part of it this year, raised over $3,000!!  It was the first year for them and they were our top new team!!!

Can't wait to hear how it turns out!

Sounds like a brilliant idea!
