My husband and I were asked to be on our churches relay team seven year ago, and have been ever since. There were years in there when we really thought we would give it up, that we didn't have the time or the desire to be involved anymore. But we somehow never managed to give it up, and besides our kids love going to the relay - it was just a big all night party to them.
Then in April of '05 our lives were turned upside down when our daughter was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia on her 6th birthday. In August of '05 she led the survivors lap around the track - bald, beautiful and 4 months in remission. She led that lap once again a couple weeks ago - this time with lots of curly hair and 16 months remission. I now know that relay will be a part of our lives for many years to come - I will be there to watch her take that lap.
We pray for the day when no other parent has to go through what we have. When this disease no longer robs us of friends and family. When relays can be all about the party because a cure has been found.
