My niece is one of the organizers of an upcoming Relay For Life. She called to tell me that she is honoring me as a cancer survivor. She was wondering if I had any ideas for her luminaria. I am not creative in the least. Does anyone have any ideas?

I am a survivor of NHL.

Thanks for any input!

Elizabeth

Ideas for Luminaria

Hi there - here are a few ideas from other volunteers I have heard over the years:

Valentine Luminaria - This is a great idea from Fayelane! "Here I am again on the Relay For Life Luminaria Committee. This year I am on a team, the luminaria committee and a survivor. I am looking for some help in selecting inspirational music for the ceremony. We are running a Valentine Luminaria sales campaign this year. We have the Relay logo and a valentine photo on ours

Valentine Luminaria

What better way to let your love "shine" than to purchase a luminaria for your special "valentine." The luminaria will be personalized with a message from you that will be lit during the Luminaria Ceremony as part of this years American Cancer Society's Relay for Life. The relay will take place on Friday evening, May 4, 2007 in Olmos Basin Park. Please take this opportunity to express your warm wishes to remember your loved one(s) that have succumbed to cancer, are currently fighting cancer and to those who bravely fought and beat their cancer. Luminaria are offered for a minimum donation of $5.00

Please join us as we illuminate hope at Central San Antonio Relay for Life 2007.

There's a name of the ones who still are here.

There's a name of those gone we still hold dear.

There's a name, each one shining in the flames.

And we know that every candle has a name.

· Have a Child With cancer decorate the bag

· Luminaria Bag in Bright Colors! - One way to make you bags stand out would be to have bags in special colors... The Tussey Mountain Relay in Saxton PA is using purple for their survivors' luminaria bags - "We wanted to do something different this year with our luminaria, and that was to have purple luminaria bags for the survivors to light themselves after their survivor lap, after the survivor lap we set up the luminaria bags then shortly after it is ceremony time. I thought it would be nice to have the survivors place their own bags around the track at random places, then light theirs. Then we could have the others light their matches from the luminarias that were already lit." - Thanks to Wendi S. for this great idea!

· Photo on Luminaria Bag - Put a photo of the person who is battling cancer or who lost the battle on the bag, to make it more memorable... Make sure it ins't an original - you don't want it to get burned!

· Luminaria Angels - Thanks to Susan of Bartlett, TN! "... Hi sometimes it is hard to sell those plain white sacks! But if you turn them into "Luminaria Angels" and add $3.00 to the $5.00 you then collect for the luminarias and add to your team at the same time... They are a site to see the night of the relay!". How to do it: Make a "head" with a round smiley face and stick on few colored paper scraps for hair. Paste that on the front of the bag. Paste some 2 inch wide ribbon with a twist in the middle on the back of the bag as wings.

Just a few ideas... if you want to see pictures of the angels please email rflvolunteer@gmail.com

luminaria
It sounds like you are referring to decorating the actual luminaria bag. I honor my mom every year with a luminaria that is decorated with her favorite things. This gives personality to the bag and brings her memory back to me stronger than the previous year. As long as your niece listens to her heart, it will be awesome!!! There is no right or wrong!
Luminaria

Hi!

You can find a couple of Luminaria scripts here.

Also take a look at the ceremonies forum. Specifically here and here.

Is this what you were after? Or were you referencing the luminaria bag itself? Personally, I'm terrible about decorating things like that.

Good luck, and if you need more help let us know.

Luminaria Ideas

The biggest thing to me is to make the luminaria ceremony short and "from the heart." It does not take much to have a great ceremony at all.  If you can find a good speaker (a teenager or young adult would be great) who will be able to give a good speech in 5-8 then you are well on your way to a great ceremony.

If you are able to include all participants in the lighting of the luminaria that will really be wonderful because then they might just be able to light their own special ones and feel like they really honored their loved one. If you don't have a stadium to set up a HOPE of luminaria then maybe you can create one out of lights and have one participant flip the switch.

To me, the only wrong way to do luminaria is to make it too long. Go with your heart. And choosing the right music is important to follow the ceremony, too. You want it to be music that people can think and reflect with.
