My name is Cale Hutchins. I am 15 years old and a student in Mackay, Australia. This year I lost my Mum who was 44, and also my best friend, to Pancreatic Cancer.

I also attended the local Relay for Life as a part of my school team. This was an inspiring experience that humbled me, standing in the cold grass, watching dawn break and to see 12,000 people still walking after a tremendous 12 hours. It was an amazing experience. It gave me the strength to help my Mum battle through the rest of her illness.

Sadly, she passed away in June, 2009. Her illness was one that spanned 18 months, she fought with the tenacity, pride and as much dignity as she could. The challenge of taking care of her was one which I shared with my Dad, and his courage during my Mum's illness, is one that I will never question. I believe that this is one of the hardest times I will have in my life, and I would not wish it upon anybody.

I know that with the help of the global community, we can make cancer a thing of the past, a memory. This is why I have chosen to share my story, because I believe that no more good people like my Mum should be taken so soon. Relay for Life is an event that is raising awareness of the hardship that those with cancer go through. It is one of the best things I have ever done and I believe that everyone should get behind a Relay event.
