Does anyone have any ideas of how to incorporate the Story of 1000 Cranes into the Luminaria/remembrance program? I was looking for something a little more upbeat than The Empty Table and The Darken Room, but don't want to go totally of course. We have many schools and young people that participate in our meetings and Relay event and I thought they might embrace the story. Any thoughts?

Are you referring to this story? The other information I found on it was related toward marriages and world peace but the Sadako story was specifically about a cancer patient. I have not read the book so I don't know if it mirrors what you would need.
I see a couple ways to use it.
1 - give away a sheet of paper, the story, and folding instructions with each luminaria sponsored in hopes of getting 1000.
2 - have them be sponsored just like a luminaria. $10 for luminaria, $15 for luminaria and crane.
During the ceremony (they're all so different now adays) have them 'unvieled'. I'm thinking have them threaded on a string (don't know enough to know if a hole will be necessary or not) and gradually pull it to length (carefull of knots) between two people carrying poles ( to get it high enough for people to see.).
Just a couple ideas.
Good luck
