Hello.
Our Relay is not planning on utilizing the web due to lack of participation from teams and also (what our chair told me) is time consuming.
Myself and another team member have talked to a few people on other teams and they would also like to be able to have a webpage, so the question is, how difficult is it to maintain the main webpage? How many hours a week are we looking at? Myself and same team member were thinking of volunteering to do this if it is not very hard(neither one of us are computer geniuses LOL) and not going to take 40 hours a week since we both have full time jobs and 5 kids each.
Thank you.

I agree it isn't too hard, now mind you some of it was set up before handed to me, but I put my personal touches on it by changing photos on different pages-used last year photos. I have had some awesome help from this site and also found some great ideas by looking at other Relay sites.

hi, i am the online chair for my event. no, it doesnt take long to keep up with the web info. i generally go in on a weekend when i have spare time and customize all of the prewritten email messages that will be going out during the season. my staff partner likes to be kept in the loop so she always likes to see them to approve them before i schedule the delivery. this can all be done ahead of time when you have the patience to sit with it. yes there will of course be some messages to get sent out that you could not have predicted early. after all what relay has not had a hiccup or two along the way? i would say the time investment could be as little as 4 hours up front for training and another 4 hours to do the prewritten customizing. then perhaps 2 hours a week. i did say as little as.... that would depend on how web savvy you are and how in depth you want your site to be. perhaps one of you could do the MM's and the other could do the timely updates that are needed.
remember that when you approach your staff partner, she has to get trained before she can decide to go with the site. if there are any problems along the course of the season, you will be going to her for questions or problems. it may be that she hasnt been trained or is too busy or she may be intimidated by the website. yes i know that would be a rare case but still something to consider as far as why she doesnt want to do it. also consider your area. if there arent many people that would use the site, would it be worth the monetary investment or is that money better off being used for your event in another way?
Lisa is correct. It really doesn't take too much time at all once you get into it and your feet wet. As you get experience it will become easier and quicker. It also depends on what you want to do with it and how time consuming that can be. Formating pictures, creating video, doing newsletters can eat up some time, but you don't need to do any of that.
The website is great for communicating to everyone in your Relay (with internet access) and outside of it. Meetings are great but the only people getting maximum value from them are those in attendance. Even passing the information along loses something. A dynamic website communicates to everyone. The main thing to keep in mind is you do need to make updates on a regular basis. There's nothing more frustrating than going to a website for news and it's not been updated. Changes don't need to be drastic. Just an update to a calendar, adding some news, changing a why you Relay story.
Don't feel like you have to create all the content. Once your participants know it is available they'll want to supply you content. They'll want their fundraisers added. Ask them for their stories. It's their website, you just do the work of adding their stories.
Once you get started with I think you'll enjoy it.
