My team of high school juniors and seniors is dreaming big this year, and hoping to host some type of large, carnival-esque event. We've heard about mini relays and read through the kit, but as an elementary school event it seems to be more of a parent-run thing than a student one. I'm sure I've heard of high schoolers doing mini relays, though, and so I was wondering if people could help with ideas, tips-- anything, really!

As a Senior in high school,

As a Senior in high school, I organized and put together an entire mini relay for our high school. We charged the students $10 to participate, and this included activities for the afternoon, lunch, a ticket for door prizes. We were able to get our local dominos to donate the pizza for the event, and pepsi cola donated us drinks. We had the local grocery store donate little bags of chips and our relay team all made a dessert or 2.

We had speakers that came in to talk to the students, and we had a whole mess of games and activities (I found that when given the chance, our gym teacher was MORE than willing to help us come up with some activites and tournaments to play). We also had one of those inflatable Bouncy Boxing rings and EVERYONE loved it. We were a school of 400 kids, and raised almost $3000. And my little brother took the reigns after i had graduated and put on mini relay 2 more years!

Make sure you have a strong hook for people to attend

At my Relay we've always gotten a few cases of Wired energy donated. If you could get something like that and get the word out that you're selling them cheap or giving them away (depending on your fund raising model) you would have a lot of people show up...I know several of my friends came to Relay last year after I told them we had Wired for $1 per can.

If you are on your ASB, or can get your ASB behind it, you'll be amazed at how much publicity you can get through them...we do assemblies, the morning announcements every day, and so many posters it can make your head spin.
