I am planning the entertainment for our relay in September and I'm trying to find some new ways of keeping participants at relay. Has anyone ever played movies during relay? How did it go? Will showing a movie defeat the purpose of walking all night? I am very conflicted about showing a movie during the relay. Any suggestions?

Thank you everyone for your advice and experiences. The committee and I are still a little torn, but we are getting closer to making a decision. For those of you that have done this at your relay, did you have any other activities going on during the movies?
Thanks again,

We did movies, theme hours/DJ/MC + music (as late as we were allowed), had food tables, and of course walking, all simultaneously... It was great. As long as you keep the volume/activity to such a level that those who want/need to sleep can (some folks might think this is too flexible - that no one should be able to sleep, but I'd rather than get a cat nap than not stay the night at all), it works well.
Our theme this year was "Under the Sea". We played 3 movies on our center stage for young and young at heart. They were displayed on a white sheet so that all relayers could see it from both sides....even the walkers! We had speakers facing in all directions. People appreciated the effort and continued to walk all night long.
Good luck! Have fun and Relay On!

We've had movies at my relay for at least the last 2 years. I was faced with either supporting or going against the movie idea this year. We have a really small relay in comparison to others, and for us, I don't feel as though movies are that great of an idea. I'm taking over Entertainment next year and I do not plan on having any movies. While there are still those who opt to walk, I feel like it encouraged too many people to lay down and watch the movies, which resulted in everyone falling asleep. I do suggest that if you decide to show a movie, show an action movie and only play one movie!
Hope this helps!
we did it at the toms river nj relay for life this year. it was awesome! we played Transformers on a huge screen, everyone layed on the football feild at night and watched the movie. everyone was really tired by that point, we played it around 130 am. but yet, there were still people walking around the track! i think it went great!
Amanda,
We did this several years ago and plan on brining it back this year. At our event, it was great because those that weren't walking had something to do in between all of our team games (or if they didn't want to be that active). It didn't hurt the walking because we showed older movies that most people had seen - so if it's their time to walk, it's not like they're "missing" the movie.
Good luck!
