-- 38 Days Until Relay --

I've got to admit that when I first got involved in this, I didn't know how this Relay thing really worked. As I noted earlier, my company's team is very active throughout the year with various fundraisers and mission activities, so I was at least familiar with what I thought was the overall idea. Turns out I had only glimpsed the whole picture...

The 2008 Relay fell in a period between Debora's major surgeries, so we were able to attend our first Relay event in June, and we were very impressed. People were having a lot of fun, but they were also passionate, respectful, and obviously dedicated to the idea that every person can contribute in their own way to removing cancer from the human condition. The Relay obviously capped much previous effort and activity. So, I wondered... how did we get here?

After asking a lot of questions and attending team, team captain, and committee meetings, I determined that a Relay For Life passes through a series of phases. The team captain training materials (which I really otta look at) probably describes these, but here's what I figure: your standard Relay progresses through...

  1. Committee formation
  2. Teams formation
  3. Fundraisers (including online)
  4. Pre-relay prep (getting the event site organized, the program prepared, etc.)
  5. A flurry of advertising to inform the public of the impending event
  6. The big event
  7. Post-event celebrations and final fundraising

Sorry about the list (I warned you about that earlier). Many of these phases overlap, or may switch places. No matter, 'cause there's good news in all this: paying attention to these phases can help us design and maintain our web site.

Next time, I'll begin to describe how I've tried to do that over the last few months. Of course, our Relay's just in steps 3 & 4 at present, so there's plenty more to figure out...
