-- 39 Days Until Relay --

One of the first conversations I had with Tom and Nicki, the Relay Committee co-chairs was "what is the purpose of the web site?" What's it for? What's it supposed to do? Who's it for? We looked at each other in bemused puzzlement and discussed it a bit, and decided on several documents to make available. This got me thinking, and I eventually sat down to work on a list (as I am prone to do).

It seems to me that it's not a simple matter. Ultimately, the purpose is to help in the fight against cancer... but how would this web site help in that effort? In its own small way, what is its role? Here's what I decided: The role of the site is to...

  1. Recruit teams
  2. Recruit team members
  3. Recruit sponsors
  4. Sign up survivors
  5. Sell luminaria for the event
  6. Communicate to team members and team captains
  7. Inform the general public about the event and activities leading up to it
  8. Provide positive recognition for teams and celebrate their achievements
  9. Exhibit our site to other Relays
  10. Further the mission of the ACS

Now ya gotta admit, that's a lot for one little 'ol site. But wait! There's more! In the midst of all this, I wondered... just who is it that we're expecting to visit the site? Yep, that gets us another list:

  1. Team captains
  2. Team members
  3. Survivors
  4. The general public
  5. Sponsors & potential sponsors
  6. Other Relays
  7. Other Online/website chairs (that's probably you!)

So as online chairs, the task we face is to build a site that fills all those roles while addressing all those different people. A bit daunting to say the least, but surely not impossible. Fortunately, it occurred to me that not everything had to happen at once... that it would be OK to build a foundation and add to it as the year progressed. That made me feel a bit better... at least I had "a plan."

BTW, if you're a child of the sixties (or have parents that were), you might remember that tune :)
