My event is April 25 & 26 2009. I have the Survivor on one end of the track and the caregivers on the othere, not too far apart,. I have the ceremony starting with the Suvivors walking to the caregivers and exchanging gifts then continueing around the track back to the stands while someone is signing "Theres a hero in you". After they are seated we have the color gard come in and the invocation and pledge. Then our guest speaker who is is 12 year old going through brain cancer treatment. Then the survivors and caregivers leave the stands to "I know where I am going". I was told by someone yestereday, after I submitted my program, that the 'walkers' will hate setting there while the survivor/caregivers do their lap and set down. They suggested I change it... As you can imagine I am in a PANIC! Should I change it now does anyone have a better way to do the survivorlap. I want the survivors and caregivers to have thier own time to shine. If we wait until the end of the ceremony then it isn't just "survivor and caregivers" it everyone and I think it takes away the meaning "survivor lap".. Please help me put my worries to bed or change my ceremony to please everyone.
Thank you good luck with you relay!!

Patty,
Stay true to celebrating your survivors, they deserve it. I don't think the walkers will mind to wait, that is why they are there in the first place!
Please let us know how it goes!
Good Luck and Happy Relaying!

Wow Patty, sounds wonderful! We do our Opening Ceremony/Remember ceremony together starting at 9:00 am and by 9:30 we invite all the survivoras to the field. We decided this year to do like any survivor 10+ years, please come to the track, any survivors 9-5 years please come to the track, etc. And then the survivors do the lap while everyone stands around the track and cheers them on. The 2nd lap we invite caregivers to join them and then after that it's a free for all! It works great! Our Relay is the same weekend, in Murrieta, CA.

DO NOT change your plans!!!! We have our survivors walk the first lap and not only do our walkers love it but they line the track and cheer/clap and encourage them. That is what the survivor and caregiver laps are all about!!!!!!
