I'm the chair of my high school Relay and right now it is only 15 days away (YIKES!). It is starting to get really difficult getting people to do their jobs and I'm really unsure of how the event is going to turn out. I am in desperate need of ideas on how to motivate my committee and get them to get their work done ASAP! Please help!!!

keep at 'em
Try emailing them and calling them, checking in and saying, "What can I help you with?" I know it's time-consuming, but it's a friendly way of pushing them and of reminding them that there is stuff to do. Also kindly remind them that these are things that need to get done in order for Relay to be successful and that you need their help. I agree with the guilt trip thing. I had some lousy turnouts at a few committee meetings. I wrote a long email about committing and following through and about what the work we do accomplishes and that I needed everyone to commit from that point on, and after that committee attendance almost tripled. Sometimes people just need firm but friendly pushes. End it with an upbeat message and your appreciation and they will end the email or call feeling positive about the talk. Good luck!

Hope it Helps!

hey courtney,

i'm also on the commitee of a high school relay. one thing that our head chairs have done is put together an outline/timeline of things that need to be done and when they need to be done by. This kind of gives everyone an idea of what is going on and when everything is due. another thing you could always try is the kind of guilt trip. you know, the speech on how fortunate everyone on the team is b/c they are healthy, and now they need to do their part to help those who aren't as fortunate. Good Luck!!
