Hi! My team is holding a golf tournament as a fundraiser this year. Aside from attending them we have no experince hosting. Anyone ever do this? Have some tips? What works, what doesn't etc.. Any info would be greatly appreciated!
My company has been hosting a golf tournament now for a couple of years and one of the things that people always enjoy are the golf gift sets. These make great giveaways for tournaments and help give your participants a sense of appreciation for their participation. As a non profit organization, I understand the need to keep on a tight budget, but sometimes you have to spend money to make money (even if it just a little). One company we have worked with in the past is great at working with non-profits! The Executive Advertising has a lot of great ideas for products to market your tournament with as well as prizes and giveaways that will help increase enthusiasm among your participants the day of. They have a really nice selection of golf gift sets to pick from so I would suggest trying these guys out for any kind of imprinted golf items! Here is one of the gift giveaways we have used, it is pretty cheap and participants love it!
Hope this helps!

golf tourney documents
We are also having a golf tournament this year. I know nothing about golf, but I have several avid golfers on my team who are generally coordinating most of the event. I will be happy to email you my sponsorship form and registration form if you would like to see copies of it. Email me at madonna.gallant@cancer.org if you want the docs I've created.

Golf Fundraiser Instructions
Here is a link to Golf Fundraiser instructions & some sample reports:
∑ Locate a local golf course who is willing to donate time for your event - First things first – you have to have a location for your event. Choose a time that won’t eat into their profits if that’s possible; that’s why you’ll see some charity golf tournaments on a weekday. Try to schedule it in the fall before your Relay (assuming your relay is the following May or June) to get your Relay season going! ∑ Appoint a coordinator for the event – This event is a great way to bring new relay volunteers into the fold, or a great activity for a committee chair who’s work happens closer to the event (luminaria, logistics, etc.) ∑ Publicize Your Event – Make sure that all the teams that are part of your Relay For Life are aware of it, and get them all involved! Put together a flyer to post everywhere. ∑ Put Together A Sign-Up Sheet/ Fact Sheet about the event – This is the form that people can turn in to sign up, and gives them the basics about the event. See the following for an example: http://www.acsrelay.org/Darn_Good_Ideas/10-Fundraising_Golf Tournament_Sign_Up_Sheet.doc ∑ Put together Rules and Regulations for Golfers - Many of your bowlers may not know the rules – have experienced bowlers on hand to help with scoring, rules/regs, etc. See the following for an example: http://www.acsrelay.org/Darn_Good_Ideas/10-Fundraising_Golf Tournament_Rules_And_Regulations.doc ∑ Put together a Sponsor/Pledge Sheet – You provide this sheet to each of your bowlers for them to collect their pledges. See the following for an example: http://www.acsrelay.org/Darn_Good_Ideas/10-Fundraising_Golf Tournament_Sponsorship_Sheet.doc ∑ After the event, team members collect the pledges, particularly where there was a pledge per pin – While flat donations could have been collected before the Golf Tournament, donations which were Pledges per Pin must be collected after the event. After the event, team members go collect from their sponsors. All collections should be completed immediately after the bowling date. ∑ Prizes – Define what prizes are received for what level of fundraising. Example:
$50+ - Official Golf Tournament T-Shirt $100+ - ? $200+ - ? $300+ - ? $500+ - ? ß Line up a golf course (if you can get some or all of it donated, all the better) ß Come up with a donation per person and a slightly more attractive price per foursome, and have folks find their golfers or let you know they want to be added to a foursome ß Have the losers on each hole have to make a $1 or $5 donation (depending on what your community can handle), in addition to paying the needed donation/entrance fee. ß Put together publicity to get the word out ß Send out an email about the event ß Get some prizes donated for the top finishers (10 would be great) ß Line up food (depending on what rules the golf course has on catering/etc.) ß Have a post golfing reception with food and prizes... Have the chair of the event say a few words, talk about what Relay is (in case everyone isn't familiar), and award the prizes Ideas to make your Golfing Event interesting ß Have prizes for various notable and notorious achievements - for longest drive, closest to tee, lowest score or most holes won (depending on your format), Most stylish golfer J, worst score, most reckless golf cart driver, etc. ß Have a nice dinner post the event! ß Have a costume contest and prizes for the wackiest outfit!
