This is my first year being on the committee, and the first year that there is going to be a Relay in my town. I'm a Luminaria committee co-chair and thought I could use some help and feedback from those of you who have already done this before.
I am wanting to start getting supplies donated for the Luminaria ceremony. I have no idea how much sand to ask for. Does anyone know a sand per bag ratio? Any help I could get would be appreciated!
Thanks,
Kristin

Sorry Kristin, I didn't notice when I posted the last comment that this is your town's first Relay...that will be tough to gauge the number of blocks, but maybe your staff partner can give you some guidance as to how many Luminaria an event your size has typically had their first time. You could start out with a few hundred and add each year as you grow. Jackie
Kristen, Our Relay does the same thing that Blake mentioned! The wooden blocks are perfect. We were lucky enough to have a local builder make them for us out of scrap lumber. We store them in plastic milk crates. They're easy to transport, stack and no mess! Our staff partner shares them among her Relays and stores them as well!
Hi Kristin,
An idea that we have found easier then sand is to have blocks of wood. The blocks are just 2x4 cut to be the length of the bag. There is a hole drilled about have way through the block since we have candles and we get the little plastic sauce cups to put the candles in. No messy sand, and the clean up! If you are not using candles and going with glow sticks then you would not have to worry about having anything drilled or the cups.

Have your staff partner pull a Luminaria report for you for the past 2-3 years. You should be able to see how many on average have been sold, then figure on more. Hard to say how many, I think that we have around 1200 bags on average for our Relay - so we added about 200 blocks to our total. Better to have too many, but if you run short, there is probably somewhere close by that you could get a couple of bags of sand to make due.
