I am a new Luminaria committee chair and was wondering if anyone had ideas that have worked in promoting Luminaria during the Christmas holidays. Was thinking that instead of spending money on gifts or other items, maybe promote the idea of a luminaria to honor or remember someone special. Has anyone found a way to make luminaria a part of the busy holiday season ?  Thanks for any comments.

Holiday Luminaria

I have had much success with "Holiday Luminaria" with one of my community events.  We purchase a festive red luminaria bag that has a starburst design die-cut in the bags (www.marlincandle.com ... Don't purchase their candles...they are too tall!).  We package them in a quart ziplock bag with a votive candle and an instruction sheet suggesting when to the light the luminaria at their homes (usually suggest Christmas eve or day).  The instruction sheet also includes information about our Relay event (date, location, website, contacts etc).  Some neighborhoods really get into it and line the streets with the bages.  We have volunteers (or teams) sell the "Holiday Luminaria" at the local grocery stores or malls on Saturdays between Thanksgiving and Christmas.  We also allow teams to take orders at their businesses, churches, schools etc.  We charge $5 but I think that will depend on your area (charge what you would normally charge for luminaria at your event).

If you would like a copy of the instruction sheet I use, please send me a message and I can e-mail it to you (it is a Word document).

Good Luck!!
