Does anyone do the relay from noon to midnight?  I now know the symbolism of walking the night but our committee was talking about doing it during the day hours to pull more community $ in for the auction and the fact most people don't seem to stay all  night long anymore.

You don't say what times

You don't say what times your Relay has been in previous years.

In previous years our relay went from 11:00 am Saturday to 11:00 am Sunday.  This year we will be changing to 9:00 am to 9:00 am.  With this time change we are hoping to be able to have more activities during the daylight hours.  We have our silent auctions from 2 pm to 7:30 pm.  Typically after the Luminaria service the crowd thins out.

daytime relay

we go from 6pm to 6 am on a Friday night,  but were thinking more would come to the auction and fundraisers at the tents if it was from 12 noon to 12 midnight on a Sat.   Survivor lap, luminaria and closing would all be at the same time at night.

Our Relay does daytime

This will be our 3rd year doing Relay, the very first year we did it from 5 P.M. to 5 A.M. and didn't have as good a turnout as we had hoped for, and we had some neighbors in the community complaining about the noise all night long. Last year we changed it up a bit and did it from 12 P.M. to 12 A.M. we had a little more turn out because of the daytime hours, but we still had 1 neighbor, yes that's right 1 measly neighbor that complained and they shut us down at 11 and we couldn't play any more music and they shut the lights off at the playground and we had to clean up in the dark...

This year we are changing venue's to a private school with their own football stadium and hopefully that will make a big difference, we are also thinking about changing the times as well from either 11 A.M. to 11 P.M. or maybe 10 A.M. to 10 P.M. to see if we couldn't get an even better turnout this year. Hope this information helps and if you need any more assistance please don't hesitate to e-mail me at princessluvs2dance@yahoo.com

daytime relay

One of our committee members was not at the meeting last night but through email heard about the discussion.  She is a survivor and she made the point very clear that the survivors want to experience the darkness to light idea that a night time relay presents.  I guess we will be doing our's at night again because it is for the survivors and if that is what means the most to them, then we will educate the community as to why and spice up the night.  We are at the fairgrounds so there are not any neighbors to complain- I mean the fair has stuff going on all week late.

Relay hours

Is there a reason you don't Relay for 24 hours?  If you Relayed for a full 24, you could get the best of all the hours...If you start and end between 9 and 11 AM, you could begin with your Opening Ceremonies, Survivor and CareGivers laps and then have time for entertainment, activities, contest, mission moments and Fight Back messages before transitioning into the Luminaria Ceremonies.  Because we are a 24 hour Relay, we use the night time to walk in quiet and reflect on the Luminaria and campout.  Then in the morning we hold our family lap, Fight Back and Closing Ceremonies and a trash pick-up lap.

I love having a 24 hour Relay and all that it represents and offers.

Keep Relaying!

daytime relay

We have our Relay from 7pm to 7am. This gives people time to get off of work and get set up. We start our silent auction at 6pm and then live auction at 6:30 so that people can get there. The auction items are shown to our Survivors the week before at the Survivor Dinner and they actually get to start the bids on the silent auction items. You could also take pictures of the items and get them in the paper before Relay or in churchs, stores, wherever you can so that people are aware. I highly suggest you keep the after 5pm start and just get the information plastered everywhere you can before the event.

Good Luck!

great idea

I like the idea of getting the photos of the auction items out prior to the auction.  Since I am the publicity person and love to take photos this will work great!  I will make up posters and see if I can get a printer to donate and put an ad in the paper too.

Thanks!
