Sarcoma Awareness at RFL event
|
I would like our Relay For Life team to incorporate sarcoma awareness this year. I think it's important because as you know it is known as the "forgotten cancer". Does anyone have any ideas? I saw bracelets and t-shirts on one website. I'd like to know if anyone else has done this.

Sarcoma
My dad, who is also the captain of our Relay team, has sarcoma (malignant fibrous histiocytoma). My little cousin passed away from rhabdomyosarcoma. She was only 9 1/2 yrs. old. I have been collecting info to have some sort of table set up at Relay this year for people to look at, to bring more awareness to this "forgotten cancer," and for people to be aware of any changes in their bodies -- "a bump just might not be a mosquito bite." There's loads of information on the "Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative" web site which is at www.sarcomahelp.org and http://sarcomahelp.org/Sarcomas/sarcomas.htm that would be great to have on display on a table at Relay for people to look at. This is a fantastic site with lots of info constructed by Bruce & Beverly Shriver who lost their daughter to Ewings sarcoma. Also, you can order "Sarcoma Knows No Borders" bracelets from the Shrivers' @ shriver@genesis2.com I have ordered bunches and given them to friends to wear to spread the news about sarcoma. They are $5.00 each. Then, there's t-shirts, sweatshirts, buttons, hats, bumper stickers, bags, etc., ("Stomp on Sarcoma," "Wipe out Sarcoma,") etc., that can be ordered online from Cafe Press to sell and raise $ for Relay, and which would also help bring awareness to sarcoma. Do a "google" for Cafe Press, and then a search for "sarcoma" on that web site. More information on sarcoma can be found at the "Sarcoma Foundation of America" which is at www.curesarcoma.org , www.sarcomaalliance.com , Also, look up www.team-sarcoma.net You can get "Team Sarcoma" shirts, etc., too, at Cafe Press. Once a year is International Sarcoma Awareness Week. The next one is July 18th-26th, 2009. This event started out with only a handful or participants and in a few years has grown to over 8,000 participants! Perhaps another idea is you can have a sign up on Relay night for people in your community to get together during Int'l Sarcoma Awareness Week to participate in an event to raise money and continue to bring more awareness to this disease. There is then the Amschwand Sarcoma Cancer Foundation, http://www.sarcomacancer.org/index.php?page=about-ascf site which has more information. Info on clinical trials: www.sarctrials.org Also perhaps make a poster up of any sarcoma patients you might know. Check out: http://www.facesofsarcoma.com/ and http://abc-survivors.net/sarcoma_cause/main.php for ideas. Hope this helps. :-) C.C. Sarcoma

Sarcoma shirts and bracelets
Were you able to see the reply to my question? Here it is. These are the same websites that I have seen bracelets and t-shirts. Raising sarcoma awareness
Although a Relay cannot raise funds for a specific type of cancer, it is still a great idea to raise awareness of sarcoma during Relay! The response above gives some great ideas. Why not have a relay during International Sarcoma Awareness Week: July 18-26, 2009? Sarcoma Knows No Borders Bracelets The Liddy Shriver Sarcoma Initiative Have fun! Mary
