Picture this...Relays taking place all around the world on the same day, sharing their experiences together.  Celebrating Survivors, Remembering those we've lost to cancer and Fighting Back against the disease...together!

It already takes place throughout the year.  Relays take place in 19 countries, at different times of the year, raising money for research, education, advocacy and services.   Bringing all kinds of communities together in the fight.  But what if a group of them took place on the same day?  They could share in their experiences together.  Learn from each other, share ideas and get even more out of their experience.

Last year, Relay For Life of Bury, UK had the fabulous idea of becoming a Relay Twin with a Relay here in the US.  They figured they would find a Relay that was taking place on the same day as theirs and they would Relay together.  We in San Ramon, California, USA were honored to be able to be that Relay and together on June 28 - 29 we Relayed Around the World.

Leading up to our Relays, we shared pictures, stories and best practices.  Andy Graham, the Bury Chair and his family actually came to San Francisco in April on Holiday and spent some time visiting with our Committee while they were here.

We had decided that between the 2 Relays we would attempt to walk the distance between us.  Having read about Lap Beads on this site, both Relays decided that that was the way to keep track, so we got a bunch of beads and shoestrings and hoped we would have enough to cover the 5190 miles between us.

On the day of Relay, Bury started at 2:00 AM our time and by the time we were cheering our Survivors around their first lap, they were well into their day.   The Lap Beads were an amazing incentive!  People said they walked longer than they had intended just so they could get more beads on their shoestring.  And in the end, Bury and San Ramon must have crossed paths, because we walked 6611 miles... more than 1400 miles further than we needed!

We would have liked to share video and pictures of our days as we experienced them, but found that we were so busy actually experiencing the day that we didn't have enough time.  However, since then, we have compiled our memories into videos to share.  It's wonderful to look at all we did, shared and accomplished!  ...and to plan for next year!

2009!  It's on its way!
So the plan for this year is to REALLY have a
Relay Around the World
Is it possible to get enough Relays taking place over the same weekend to walk the circumferance of the Earth?
We think it is!

Do you want to be a part of this?
Is YOUR Relay sometime between
July 26-28th?

We need to walk 24,901.55 miles
(40,075.16 kilometers).
We are certain that if we get enough Relays together we can accomplish this feat!
We'd love to have you join us!

Looking for more relays to join us!

Hi all we have only 3 weeks to go until our attempt to relay around the world!

We need a total of around 8 relays from different time zones across the world to make this work... we already have Relay For Life Bury UK and Relay For Life San Ramon CA. We also have some interested relays from the west coast of the USA (but none fully confirmed), we also need relays from the other time zones across the USA.

We are attempting something which has never been done before in that we want to walk the distance around this great planet of ours (24,900 miles)in our colective 24 hours whilst setting up a live video link (via the internet) between all relays in the network.

This is a great way to encourage your participants to turn out and walk... it is also a great way to learn from each other in an environment of mutual encouragement!

Imagine including a virtual passing of the "baton" and a few words of encouragement from your fellow relayers in your your opening ceremony!

Are you up for the challenge?

Then get intouch with either myself Andy Graham Relay For Life Bury UK) at andy@relayforlifebury.org or Juli Fountain (Relay For Life San Ramon) at relaydivajuli@comcast.net

Let's get ready to relay

Here is a press cutting from my local news paper which mentions our international efforts.

September 11 & 12

Checking back to see if any Relays around the World are happening on the same days as ours. Looking for someone to possibly partner with so we can get more publicity. These don't happen that often so it is good for advertising and more exposure. Please let me know if you are interested. EMail swg49@charter.net.

Possibly looking for an international Relay partner

My name is Steve Gallant and our relay is in Auburn, Massachusetts, USA. Our next event will be held on September 11 and 12. We start at 6:00PM EST on Friday night and finish at 12 Noon on Saturday. We are thinking about doing what the Relay in Bury, UK and San Ramon, CA did. I believe having a partner helps with pride of accomplishment when you are so far apart trying to get to a common goal.

If you are interested in talking about it, respond to this post. I will keep monitoring.

Thanks

Steve Gallant

Sister Relays

Hi Steve!

How awesome!  We definately got a lot out of sharing our days and had a great time, as well!

Rocklin, CA www.RelayForLife.org/RocklinCA and El Dorado County, CA www.RelayForLife.org/ElDoradoCountyCA are both on that weekend.

I can see that Redwood City, CA had their Relay that same weekend last year and Orangevale, CA's is scheduled for that weekend, as well.  But neither Redwood City and Orangevale sites aren't up yet.

If I see any others on your weekend, I'll holler!  There's gotta be a sister Relay out there for you!

Sister Relays

It seems like there is not to much publicity with the ACS about this site. I believe that if we had more of these partnership relays that we would get more free advertising. When we find a partner, we plan to have laptops on the field with web cams so the other relay will see what we do. This is both great advertising but also a learning experience.

The main problem is that this site is very hard to find. ACS needs to make a simpler menu system that makes all the different ideas into an index so if you want to find out about partnering you would be able to pull down some sort of index rather than short menus that you have to wade through.

I suppose that we are an unusual relay because we are one of the only ones to have ours in the fall. We also start on a Friday night and end at Saturday noon. We are looking for someone who has their relay with some hours at the same time as ours. We start at 6pm on Sept 11, and end at noon on Saturday.

If there are any relays out there with some of the same hours let us know.

Steve

Relay Around The World

Go Juli... Go Juli... Go Juli... We had a great time didn't we?

I am sure that the right relays are out there and they will step up and take on the challenge.

We are breaking new and historical ground... just like someone else we know over there right now!

Our first committee meeting will be on Wednesday 12th November and it would be so inspirational for our team to hear that more relays want to come and join us and our good friends in San Ramon for 2009.

Come on America... we await your call!

:0)
