Hi guys and girls, it's been a while since I posted in the forum. When I was last here I was looking for an American relay to join with us in Bury, UK so that we can relay together in mutual encouragement and support.
Well i had a few replies and we "twinned" with Relay For Life San Ramon, Califonia. This partnership was a huge success as we set out to wallk the distance between our two venues (5212 miles) in our alotted mutual 24 hours, and to broadcast our events via the internet.
What we actually achieved was to walk over 6000 miles and to broadcast for 22.5 hours of the 24, and have gained a great deal from the mutual support and encouragement.
We are now looking for further relays to join us in and effort to "Relay Around The World", this is a hugely ambitious project as we intend to walk the distance around the earth (24900 miles).
We estimate that we need 6 further relays to join us and we would like one of those to be from the East Coast of America, this is because we want to be able to "pass the baton" via video link and therefore need relays from various time zones to be able to achieve this.
If you have a relay on the East coast of America, you are set to take place on the weekend of the 27th & 28th June 2009, and you think you can cope with this monumental and historical event then please contact me.
Thank you all

Hi all we have only 3 weeks to go until our attempt to relay around the world!
We need a total of around 8 relays from different time zones across the world to make this work... we already have Relay For Life Bury UK and Relay For Life San Ramon CA. We also have some interested relays from the west coast of the USA (but none fully confirmed), we also need relays from the other time zones across the USA.
We are attempting something which has never been done before in that we want to walk the distance around this great planet of ours (24,900 miles)in our colective 24 hours whilst setting up a live video link (via the internet) between all relays in the network.
This is a great way to encourage your participants to turn out and walk... it is also a great way to learn from each other in an environment of mutual encouragement!
Imagine including a virtual passing of the "baton" and a few words of encouragement from your fellow relayers in your your opening ceremony!
Are you up for the challenge?

Andy,
We would love to help you here in Rifle, CO, however our Relay is June 12 & 13. Know of any International Relays on that weekend?
I love the concept maybe we can do something smaller and similar, OR we could kick off the walking, you could have other events walk the next weekend and you could close the loop!
Let me know if we can help!

It's about a community taking up the fight!
Hi Theresa and Carol, so far we have 3 relays which are set for the 13th & 14th June... you can find their details on the Cancer Research UK Relay For Life web pages the address is:

I don't know the chairs of these events:
Wigtown
St Agnes & Perranporth
Braunton
but if you are interested in creating an international relay link then it is definately worth contacting them.

Interesting. Do those relays go Saturday to Sunday? We go Friday night to Saturday. That could be fun in that we really could pass off the baton as it were to our overseas partner.

Let's turn HOPE into a CURE!
Yes all our relays tend to run for 24 hours from 11:00am or 12:00pm on the Saturday through to 11:00am or 12:00pm on the Sunday.
Obviously you would need to take the time differnce into account, in the summer the Uk is around 5 hours ahead of your east coast and 8 hours ahead of your west coast.

Hi all, it seems there are a few relays that are interested in the concept of Relaying Around The World but are unable to join Bury & San Ramon due to being on a different weekend to us.
I would like to help these events from both sides of the atlantic to find each other and get it on! So I have posted a similar message to this on amongst the Cancer Research UK relays to start the process.
I have also launched a website to help co-ordinate or efforts and point people in the direction of the relevant official Relay For Life websites in order to provide introductions.
The site is not intended to detract from the work of the ACS or CRUK in anyway and is purely a tool to assist in the joining together of properly registered relay events and to encourage people who are not involved in relay to join or begin one.
If you would like me to point other relays in your direction please don't hesitate to contact me.
The website is: www.relayaroundtheworld.org
I look forward to hearing from you

There is also a new group called Relay Around the World and a Forum called International Relays in which we can all participate. The Relay Around the World Group is a public group on this site where we can discuss, plan and share ideas. http://www.relayforlife.org/relay/node/4617
Thank you!
