This week, the Relay For Life National Leadership Team met for a regular meeting, except this time, there was something special added to the agenda for the week. The group decided that rather than spend money going out to eat, we could do more good with our meal than just stuffing our faces. So, it was decided that we would visit one of the Atlanta Hope Lodge facilities (they have 2 in Atlanta), and cook dinner for the guests.
We divided into two groups (one to cook dinner, the other to clean). I was fortunate to be a part of the cooking crew (I hate to clean dishes). Not only did we have fun making a healthy meal, but we were able to share it with cancer patients and their caregivers.
One inspirational moment was just before we all sat down for dinner - one of the guests, who had spent the last 3 weeks in the hospital had finally come "home" to the Hope Lodge. They weren't expecting her, but her treatment had gone well enough and she had recovered enough to return to the Hope Lodge for a more comfortable environment among friends and family. She was wearing a mask because she had a compromised immune system (from the treatment), but it was so inspiring to see the reaction of the staff and guests when they realized that she was back.
There was also another person who announced that they would be leaving the next day. It was a bittersweet reaction from the guests and staff. While they are sad to see a friend leave, they are happy for them...because leaving the Hope Lodge means that you are well enough and your cancer treatment has ended...positively! So, it was a moving experience, as a whole, kind of like watching your first Survivor's Lap. You know that moment when you realize that your invovlement with Relay For Life and the American Cancer Society truly makes a real difference in real people's lives. And there's nothing more reinforcing than seeing and talking to the people that have benefitted from YOUR Volunteerism.
