This is my 1st year as a team captain and i am terrified. I have a family team dedicated to the memory of my mom and my brother. Our theme for 2009 is a western theme. I have some ideas as to what kinds of things to use for decorations, but im not sure of anything else. im afraid that my team is just saying they will be my team rather than getting out there and actually helping with the fundraising.
if you could give me any advice on ANYTHING please do!!! thanks
I'm sure a lot of team captains can identify with your feelings but let me tell you, there are so many people who will do anything to make sure your first year is a success.
Have you had a chance to take the Team Captain training that's available on this website?? It's great and it will help you organize your team so you don't find yourself doing all of the work.
My second recommendation would be to start fundraising NOW! Again, you'll find tons of great ideas on this site for fundraisers. You can do anything from a bake sale to a fundraising dinner and about everything inbetween. Here's a simple one. Have your friends and family help you raise money by filling a water bottle with change. You could buy some bottled water, add a label to remind them why they are donating their change and your contact information, and then ask them to return the bottle to you by a certain date. The change adds up quicker than you would imagine.
If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to contact me. Working together, we will find a cure!

New teams are so exciting! Y'all will be great. Make sure you check out your team handbook - usually available at the kick off - for ideas on putting your team together. I would suggest having a team meeting. Have everyone talk about why they are on the team and how they would like to raise money and what they would like to do. Hopefully that will get them eager to participate. Depending on your event - luminary sales are often a good and simple fundraiser. Also ask other team captains and ask questions at meetings. They've got great ideas and are happy to share, I'm sure.
