I would love to hear from anyone if they have ever implemented a Boot Camp for Team Captains? I know this web-site has great things for team captains to look up and find and even chat or track about information but sometimes people need a more personal hands on experience.
I've noticed over the years that alot of new teams join at all times of our Relay Season. It's not easy to try to catch up and understand what is going on. Most captain meetings are short and can only get out so much information without overwhelming you. This year we had 109 teams. It was hard for our Team Captain Coordinator to try to give individual service to the new teams while still trying to keep the meetings on time and fun.
My plan was to have a 2-hour Boot Camp, happening about 2-3 times year. The Camp would be divided between 2 classes. Team Captains can sign up for which class they feel they need or can attend. This did not replace captain meetings, only to give more personalized help to those who need it.
Class #1 would be an Introduction to Relay. This would talk about what Relay is, show photos, discussed their role as Team Captain and go over the kit they get as well as basic rules of Relay. At the end, people can talked about what kind of fundraisers they can do prior to, during and after Relay.
Class #2 would have the On-line chair help people with registering a team on-line, how to use the web-site to send out e-mails and how to customize their team/individual page. We would find a place that either had computers with Internet access or have Wi-Fi access where people can bring their laptops and share with those who do not have one. We find a lot of team captains shy away from the online because they are afraid to mess up. We want to make it comfortable for them and to answer any questions they have.
This Boot Camp is not required for Captains. I don't want anyone to feel they have to go. I want to make this a great experience that will help them be a more successful team and have more fun at Relay. Any thoughts? Any ideas? - Jen
