I just got back from the Great West Division Summit in Reno, NV. What a wonderful experience! I had such an amazing time and can't wait to implement what I learned over those few days! Definitely bring a big suitcase, we got tons of goodies to bring home. Go with an open mind and be sure to share your ideas! I got all kinds of new ideas from other participants. Like I said, it was an amazing experience and I know you'll have a great time!
I just returned from the Great West Summit as a first time summit participant, although I've been doing Relay for 11 years. I was blown away by our Summit - incredibly inspirational, very educational, and tons of fun! Suggestions - take a big suitcase, and leave half of it empty - the Relay vendors we had were awesome and I had trouble packing all the goodies I bought to bring home! And don't eat for a week before Summit - if yours is anything like ours, you'll eat like you are on a cruise ship! Tons of food, and really great food. Ours was held at the Grand Sierra Hotel in Reno, NV. And my last suggestion - come ready to share ideas and get lots of new ones! Have fun!!

Hi! I have been to several Illinois Leadership Summits as a participant and as a trainer! Its a great experience! You will have the opportunity to meet people from all over the state! There's different break out sessions or "seminars" if you will... where you will be informed and "armed" with information about Relay For Life. There are also many other activities that go on throughout the weekend. You will have the opportunity to feel and see the energy that really charges up the volunteers and staff of the American Cancer Society. Here you will just start to see that Relay For Life is more than just an event...its an experience!
I have been a volunteer for the ACS since 2004 after my 2nd battle with cancer. Its been quite the journey and experience! I have made many friends through my visits at various Leadership Summits. I hope that you will enjoy your first one and hopefully I will see you there!
last year I went to a leadership summit, there is a lot of information when you go to this, so if you are thinking of going you should go. this year, I will be going again to the leadership summit. you meet a lot of volunteers from the state, and they tell what they do for there relay for life event in there home town.
I am also going to the High Plains Summit in September. This will be my 2nd and whichever Summit you are going to you are in for an Awesome experience!!! You will meet tons of Volunteers just like yourself. There are General sessions which tend to be Celebratory and full of info. Breakouts which are full of ideas and info more specific dor you. It is tons of fun, very informative and you will leave armed with the tools you need to make your Relay successful and full of enthusiasm!!! More specifically you will be among @1,300 other Relayers who Love and Care for people affected by Cancer.
I am in Mt. Pleasant, Texas and was wondering if you are going to be attending the Summit that will take place in Dallas on September 12-14, 2009. I'm trying to do some networking before I get there, because I will be attending all alone. Thanks!
I can't speak for all Divisions. But, the Mid-South Division has a blast! You will have general sessions where they will have a blast while having the meeting. We have entertainment, ceremonies, etc. Just like a regular Relay. You will then also have break out sessions. Depending on what you are going as (chair, co-chair, team development, etc), you will attend break outs that are directed to help you in your position. They do things on building teams, recruiting, so glad you ask training, publicity, and more! It is a blast! These break out sessions are very fun and informational. When you leave the summit, you will come back on fire for Relay.
I am also going to the Summit in September! I am thinking you are talking about the High Plains Leadership Summit? I have been to it before, and it is a blast. It is a three-day weekend FULL of Relay all the time. THere are general sessions and small group breakouts. These are the primary two ways that they give info. There is also a nice 'event' you might call it on Saturday night. Last year, they did they Luminaria Ceremony during that time. This year, since it is Celebrating 25 Years of Hope, they invite you to wear your 80s gear! Summit is a truly uplifting experience and will keep you pumped all year long!
Hey Nick! I'm going to ask you the same thing I asked Mike-are you attending the High Plains Summit that takes place in Dallas, TX on Sept. 12-14? I am trying to meet some people before I get there, because I will be attending all alone. I can't wait to rock my 80's gear!! Thanks!
