Recycling Bins for Plastic Bottles
|
It's just a small start to going green, but we set up clearly marked recycling bins near the trash cans at our Relay. Our event was at our community center and the City let us put the bottles in their recycling dumpster for pickup. Many or our teams sell water, Gatorade, etc so we ended up with a lot of bottles! Raise Money by Recycling
Recycling is a great idea! Both Relays I am involved in recycle. The State of California provided us with recycle bins free of charge. They were placed near garbage cans and about one for every two campsites. Trash will ultimately find its way into the bins, but for the most part it is just cans and bottles. At both Relays, the Logistics Chair would then take the turn in the recyclables for cash raising additional money for the Relay. It is a win win situation. Purple Going Green
This was our second year trying to be as green as possible. Besides recycling, we have large paper 'leaf bags' for food scraps and biodegradables. We have an arrangement with the local transfer station that we can bring in our biodegradables free-of-charge. We use only paper plates and cups and biodegradable utensils...no plastic or styrofoam. Last year we turned in 160 pounds of biodegradables. This year we turned in 260. I'm not really sure just what that says, though. All plastic & aluminum gets placed in the recycling containers loaned to us by the city and we later sort those out to return and get refunds for where possible, but turn in all whether or not we get money for them. It's always disappointing to see how much trash we create, it but feels like we are improving and starting to create less waste. One of our big frustrations this year was trying to figure out how to weigh down our Luminaria bags. Being on turf, we cannot use sand. So this year, we used canned food. Each team donated 36 cans of food and at the end of Relay, we donated them to the local food bank. Also a win-win. recycling at relay
I love the food drive idea! Last year my son's cub scout troop took care of our recycleables for part of their service project. They decorated cardboard boxes (from a local appliance store) and put them at either end of the track. We pointed them out during the opening ceremony and people did a great job using them. The den leader and a few of the kids came back at 6am to retrieve the boxes and recycle the contents. No extra committee needed and both the bottles and the boxes were recycled. Sounds like a win-win to me! |
