Has anyone gotten sand donated from the local Fire Dept.? I was told this had been done in previous years and was no problem, but my calls to the local fire dispatch have been difficult to get an answer. They keep transferring me around and I often get disconnected in the process. Any advice?
We get ours donated from Home Depot and Lowe's. In the past we have also used Wal-Mart (I think we had to pay that year, we ran out and needed some in a hurry).

We asked one of the county
We asked one of the county commissioners to scoop us some dirt. Think about it, he works the roads and has dirt for free so that's what we did.

I've been involved in 2
I've been involved in 2 relays at two different schools (a community college and a high school). Both said go ahead and use the sand in the pit at the track as long as we put it back.

Donated Sand
We had a landscaping company donate our sand last year.
This year we used glow sticks and water filled GLAD zip sealed bags for weights. It worked out so wonderfully! No flaming Luminaria this year. Clean up was quick and easy. Yippee!

Donated Sand
We don't get our sand donated from the fire department - we can't get much support from them. But...we do have a concrete company based in our town and they provide us with a load of sand at no cost. They even drive to our site and dump it for us on Relay day.
