This is my first year with Relay. I have never attended a Relay but a friend asked me to start a team so I did with my family & friends. We have had a blast and our Relay theme is Nascar and our team campsite theme is Luau For Life. We have built a tiki bard out of bamboo and we are setting up 2 tents with lounge chairs/umbrellas, tiki torches, etc. But I feel like I am missing something snazzy to bring in the importance of why we are all hear and maybe bring in the NASCAR theme too???? We are going to have a memory wall with pictures of our loved ones that we are doing this in honor of but I still feel like we are missing something. Our Relay is a week away (4/25) so if you could offer any suggestions that would be terrific!!!
Also - we have several gift certificates donated from local businesses to help us raise more money at Relay but I am having trouble trying to figure out what we can do at our campsite to give people a chance to win them????? I am running out of ideas!! Thanks for any assistance!!
Our theme last year in Miami County Oh was Islands of the Cure-a- bein. Our campsite went with the luau theme as well. I visited our local party store and they had a ton of luau stuff, leis, coconut drink cups and all kinds of things. Also, not sure if you have a Joann Fabric store in your neck of the woods but they have a whole party theme for luau stuff this season. We put up tiki candles and torches as well. We made home made lei kits for the kids. I punched out colorful colored foam flowers and added spacers made of cut up colorful straws and included string and let the kids make their own leis. Our team name was Islanders who Relay Care. So our speal was "become and official Islander who Relay cares with your own Islander Leis." These were a big hit with the kids.
Hello from Alaska. Here is a suggestion for tying the NASCAR theme together with the reason we Relay! Do you know about an "alphabet poem"? You take each letter and create a poem beginning with each letter. Such as:

Of course you can play with the different words you use, but that is one idea for you.
As for your gift cards....what about coconut bowling?? You can charge a certain amount for each game or for each player and the winner can win a gift card. Does your Relay have a silent auction? (ours here does). You can donate your gift certificates to the silent auction and whatever amount is raised goes towards your teams (or individuals) goals. or...in keeping with your fun luau theme, what about a Limbo competition?
Also, along with your theme you can get cheap fake flower leis and have your team members wear them.
I LOVE the coconut bowling idea!!! I think they are doing Limbo as one of the Relay events so I did not want to do it at our tent too....but maybe since we do have tons of bamboo stalks :-) We have the leis for our team members too - those are a definite for any Luau. Thanks for your ideas!
