Normally we give roses to the survivors during their lap, but i was looking to do somehting different. Possibly cheaper. Our flower shops are all donated out. Any of you guys hand out something different to your survivors for them to carry on their opening lap?
We give T-shirst and a lapel/hat pin at our Celebrate/Remember breakfast. On Relay night we give them the star-on-a-stick and they write how long they are surviving, i.e. 1 year, 5 years, 3 months, etc.
It is cheap and shows their S-number. The Survivor pins are great too. We used to give the medalions on a ribbon but who is going to wear that to Wal-Mart or Church? I see people wearing the pins all the time.
sorry to hear about the flower shops being unable to donate.. have you checked with a grocer in the area? usually the larger grocers have florists in them. We just got a local florist here to do purple carnations- which are cheaper than roses. We are also doing a balloon release, ours is a little different though than a group release. Around the track we will have markers starting with - "in treatment now" - "1-5 years" - "6-10 years"- "10-15 years"- "15 years plus (cancer free)" so when the survivors get to their marker they will release their balloon. So it is a kind of an individual release for them to mark their years cancer free. I also just got for $1.00 each at a dollar store, purple and pink pom poms, they were 1.00 each for two- so that could be something you could have the survivors carry..) (We are using ours for people around the track) But I think relay has some- I know our event chair had some, or you could get an art class to make some home made with crepe paper. Good luck!

At our Relay we present each Survivor with a balloon and at the end of the Survivor lap we all gather together to release them. Hope this helps with another idea!

Hmmm I don't know how soon your event is but this could be really heartwarming and sweet. Ask some of your local teachers (It could actually be a great lesson for ANY grade level.) if they would explain what the Celebrate and Survivor Lap aspect of the Relay is and then have their students write or draw (or both) a picture and/or letter of what being a survivor means to them or saying congratulations or saying they are proud or whatever they wish (kids can find just the best words sometimes!) and give each survivor a letter/picture-- maybe in an envelope addressed creatively. or not. It's just a thought. good luck!
