I live a small town in Texas of maybe 1200 people. Our Relay is one of the oldest Relay's around. But through the years people have lost interest. I have been involved in Relay for 10 plus years. This is my second year to be event chair. It seems like since I took chair people have been dropping like flies. The community doesn't have a problem with me or anything. They just know with me and my family we will get it done. People are wanting us to stop having Relay because of the low participation. I refuse to let it stop. What I am needing is ideas of getting them involved. If you are from a small town and know of ways please let me know. My attitude is that Relay started with one person and if need be I will carry on our relay with just my family. But I would really like to have the town to be involved as well. Please send help.
Our Relay is May 2nd and I only have 2 teams. I'm getting ready to switch to panic mode.
I think you should put an article in the local paper, maybe a letter to the editor, and tell your story, tell how you are determined to keep the event alive, that it started with one and that you will be the one if need be, but that you would like help. Make it personal, why you relay. People did it at one time for a reason and if they hear that you will keep it going, they might do it again. Plead your case.

What to do?
You could do many things. You have people from a couple towns over to get involved. Ask for donations from differnt buisnesses and ask for differnt buisnesses to advertise. You could also do something big within the community like a fund raiser like a miny fair that has random thins. You could also have differnt activities at the relay. You could have like bounce houses and stuff for the kids. You could have contest like Mr. and Mrs. Relay. Each lap could be something differnt like sunglasses lap and stuff. You could also find a local performer or singer. Have them there for live entertainment. You could also have a barn fire. Target the schools and the main buisness. Talk to the manager and the princepals about starting a school team. Or you could have a team from the local hospital or something. They would be glad to join. The kids like the entertainment and the hospitals would be happy to help the cause.

Small community Relay
We're a relatively modest-sized Event, and our cornerstone teams have always been church-affiliated. In fact, we have a local pastor as a "spokesperson" for why his community participates. Perhaps his statement on our Event home page can help your recruiting efforts. Check out half-way down the home page of www.IWSRelay.org.
Second thought...service clubs in your County's high school.
