Hi Brenda, My team and I

Hi Brenda,

My team and I did this for this year and it went great. At first sales were hard because people really didnt get it at first but it picked up after word got around. We sold balloons for 1 dollar and they wrote their love ones name and in honor or memory and also a short message. Since this was the first time my relay has ever had this I made a speech that explained things and the message releasing the balloons meant to me and my team. It was really great and an event I will always remember, and it touched a lot of people. After that to pick up the mood a bit we played the Rocky theme song and "Were not gonna take it" by the Twisted Sisters. We had our release after our luminary ceremony and also sold them next to and the same time as the luminaries and it worked out great for the luminaries and the balloons. My team raised over a thousand dollars overall but I credit at least 85% of that to the balloons. Its great I think everyone should do it.

We are thinking of doing the
We are thinking of doing the balloons with messages and maybe some kind of blinking light inside as our fundraiser at the relay itself and letting them go at midnight. How do we find out if this is something we can do at our relay? Can anyone direct me here? We are in Ga. thanks! :-)
I'd check with your city

I'd check with your city officials to see if there is an ordinance against balloon releases - or if there are certain requirements. I live near a national marine sanctuary and know that balloon releases are illegal in my general area - but that's not the case everywhere.

It's a beautiful idea - and would make a great fundraiser... selling balloons to release, especially with messages to heaven on them.

Balloons To Heaven

We have a balloons to heaven ceremony between our opening ceremony and luminary ceremony. People can purchase a balloon for $2. They write a message to their loved one. We gather at the stage, play a moving song and then release the balloons all at once (around 200 balloons). If you get latex balloons they are 100% biodegradable. You have to tie by hand and use raffia or hemp string that is biodegradable. There are websites that have information about balloon releases.

Ballon Release

We are going to use them as a send off for our Survivors...we'll be having a group of Girl Scouts giving ballons to the Survivors as they enter the track for the first lap.. & on cue from the speaker all Survivors will be asked to release the ballons....I'm thinking of just what to say at that time... maybe "Survivors lets release the ballons in HOPES for a CURE"....then start the Clebration of our Survivor lap....

Balloon Release

It is when there is like people inm your town a celebration form of getting people intrested. Some people do it after a successful fund raiser at the relay or any where to advertise and get people involved. Fist u usually walk around and hand out balloons and then let a whole bunch of them go into the air. Usually for the relay for life we Have the balloons be purpple and they say Relay For life on them.

My ACS Staff partner has

My ACS Staff partner has given me tons of those purple balloons..but my question is..when do you release them?  Why? Is there something symbolic? Is there something written down and then put inside the balloons?  ..Just wondering.  I think seeing tons of the purple balloons in the sky would be awesome..and I have several.. But someone on an earlier post called it a "ceremony"..so I was wondering what exactly it is!?

Thanks!!

Balloon release

Brenda,

We have a balloon release and call it "Hope Floats". One of the teams signs up to do this fundraiser - they sell balloons before and at Relay. They inflate them and people write directly on the balloons. Some events have scraps of paper that they write messages on and put them in the balloons. We have it on our schedule at 8:00 (so it's light enough to see them). We just say a few words from the stage and then everyone releases them at the same time. We only spend about 5-10 minutes on it. Hope this helps!

Baloon Release

I love this idea! I am the Event Chair at our Relay this year and I think I will be passing this along to my Fundraising Chair. Thank you for sharing!
