We are doing a university relay at California Polytechnic State Unversity in San Luis Obispo...aka Cal Poly, but students here call it "Poly" So, isntead of "Paint our Town Purple" we call it "Paint Poly Purple". We are tying purple ribbon around a ton of trees, and putting balloons up all around campus. We also have a couple RFL banners that we are hanging high up in our University Student Union and we designated a "Wear Purple Day". Also, we are decorating a few of our signature campus landmarks with everything purple. One of the best ideas is our Relay for Life Purple Pledge Board where students can come during the weekly outdoor concert and trace their hand with a purple marker on the board, and then inside their hand they write their reason to Relay or a little story about their experience with cancer!

in my town, most of our volunteers have very full plates with work, family etc. may 1st is not always good for the schedule (weekdays are full) so we shift our decorating to the nearest weekend day to may 1. This year will get shifted to sat. that way we get more people to show up and spread out to cover as much as possible. i can understand doing the decorating on the friday before though. in some areas, lets face it, how long can we put something up before either the weather or vandals get to it? hope this helps. whichever day you choose, remember to have the date and phone number obvious on anything you put up. the idea is to get the word out there even more.

Paint the Town Purple
Last year my team tried to do something for "Paint the Town Purple" but it did not go over well at all. We sold purple pew bows for people to hang up for the day on trees, mail boxes, etc. But other ideas for it would be to get purple balloons and maybe just put those on the sponsors doors which should help get the word out about the event when customers go there.

Last year was the first year California really got involved in POTP. For us, it was May Day, or May 1st. In our area, we were calling it both "May Day For Relay" and "Paint Our Town Purple".
At the Town Council meeting the month before, the Mayor declared that May 1st would be May Day For Relay and read a proclaimation. Then they let us talk about what Relay is and why we Relay. We had a couple of the kids and a survivor speak.
April 30th, we decorated the central park and then the morning of May first (we wanted it to be after work, so we could get lots of people there, but the Mayor was unavailable), we put up a balloon arch and then had a quick ceremony to dedicate the day.
It was a start. We hope to be bigger this year and have the ceremony after work.

Paint the town purple day is usually the Friday before your local event??? so this year our event is on April 12th - so our paint the town purple day would be on Friday April 11th...

I would definately check with your local ACS staff partner. Each Relay does things differently. Our local Relay doesn't even do anything for Paint Our Town Purple day. I've always read and heard that it's on May Day, which is May 1st. But like I said, each Relay has their own way of doing things, so check with your staff partner! Good luck and have fun!!
