I just found out that I need to speak for 5 minutes tomorrow on the Mission.
It is for our Event Kickoff Rally and I'm not sure I even understand what is meant by Mission, let alone what to say about it to potential relayers/volunteers for FIVE WHOLE MINUTES!!
Don't get me wrong, I present in public as a profession, so I am not nervous, but rather concerned about giving not only an accurate but a meaningful, moving and/or inspiring message.
Please help. I'm truly desperate. (Will also post this in the Mission forum. I need all the help I can get!)
Thanks for any information you have...

The real biathalon is a combination of cross country skiing and shooting with misses in the shooting punishable by extra cross country skiing. Well, why not a biathalong using running and questions? Teams compete with each runner having to run a certain distance and then answer a cancer education question. If they get it wrong then they have to perform a penalty of some sort (jumping jacks, pushups, squats, etc - your choice). When they complete the punishment then they continue on and handoff to the next team member.
Ted, you are a true blessing! ![]()
Your time and caring in responding to my plea has not only saved our Kickoff, buy ensuring we will have a purposeful Mission message, but your cell phone suggestion will ensure that everyone who attends will be empowered to Fight Back at any moment, and that they may well choose to serve and to be a blessing for another.
Pass it on!
Thank you, Ted. I'm all set now!
Merced's pretty far, but if your visiting San Diego on May 17-18, come visit us at Hilltop Community Park and look for TEAM ISLAS! and for me... Chelle.
I'd be thrilled to thank you in person...
Hello Tia Mouse,
You are welcome. I am glad I was able to share my knowledge in the area of Mission Delivery with others to help move the American Cancer Society mission forward. How did your presentation turn out?
As much as I would love to travel to San Diego to visit your Relay, I will not be able to. I work on Saturdays and just will not be able to do so. Again, you are welcome and I'm glad I could help.
Best of luck with your Relay.
Ted
It was better than FABULOUS, Ted! And people DID program in the phone number, and to be honest with you, I didn't know that phone number before Kickoff.
Then, just 36 hours later I needed it!
Not happy to have a friend in need, but so grateful to have a way to help! You really did so much more than help frame a Mission statement for our Kickoff.
It's too bad I won't have the opportunity to thank you in person, but it was worth asking, right? Have a wonderful evening!
Happy (and successful) RELAYing!
Thank you so much! I am happy to have been able to help. This is what RelayForLife.org is all about: Relayers helping Relayers.
My first time presenting the Cell Phone mission moment was at the first committee meeting I attended. I really did not know what to expect and it went over quite well. You can read about it on my blog entry titled My First Committee Meeting. The committee liked it so much I was asked to present it at the next team captains' meeting. Then again at the Survivor's Reception. Since then, it has become my impromptu mission moment. It really is a good one.
I am sorry to hear about your friend. Make sure they use the number. I am sure you already know, but the American Cancer Society offers numerous services free of charge.
Being able to make a difference is one of the reasons I relay. Thank you for allowing me to do so. If there is anything else I can do, please send me an e-mail or I'll just catch you on another forum. (c:
Ted
p.s. Perhaps one day I will be able to make it to San Diego for a Relay. You can thank me in person then.
Start with the American Cancer Society Mission Statement:
The American Cancer Society is the nationwide community-based volunteer health organization dedicated to eliminating cancer as a major health problem by preventing cancer, saving lives, and diminishing suffering from cancer, through research, education, advocacy, and service.
Then explain the REASon why we relay.
-
R - Research (choose a research fact) $100 million towards research per year.
-
E - Education (choose an education fact) 2/3 of cancer deaths are preventable.
-
A - Advocacy (choose an advocacy fact) ACS CAN is the sister organization.
-
S - Service (choose a service fact) Services provided 24/7 365 for free.
I gave some local information about cancer. Here's some local information about San Diego County.
- 12,130 people in San Diego County are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2008.
- 4,625 cancer deaths are expected in San Diego County in 2008.
*Source: California: Cancer Facts & Figures, 2008.
Finish up by providing the American Cancer Society toll-free number, (800) ACS-2345, and the website URL, www.Cancer.org.
If you want to do a mission moment, I suggest the Cell Phone Mission Moment. Ask everyone to take out their cell phones. Ask them to program in their phones the ACS toll-free number, (800) 227-2345, as Cancer Information. Explain the reason for doing this is so they will always have the toll-free number available should they need to share it with another person. How many times in a casual conversation do we learn of family or friends who know someone who is fighting their battle against cancer? By having the ACS toll-free number programmed in our phones we can easily retrieve it share and spread awareness about the services provided by the American Cancer Society.
I hope this helps. It is pretty much the formula I used at our rally. Best of luck!
