Annie Patrick's son, Zak, is the Team Captain for a team with his fellow dorm members at Nothern Michigan University. He became involved in this event because cancer has touched their lives in a very personal way. He walks in honor of Annie's mother, Carley Myers, and his favorite aunt, Bunny, who both battled hard, yet cancer took their lives.

Annie said, "My mother was an advocate for Relay for Life. She kept a journal during her last months of life, after her death on June 26, 2002 I read this entry and thought I would share it:"

"June 8, 2002, Cancer walk today!! Quite incredible! People from all walks of life who have for some reason been caught in this disease.

I walked the 1st walk around [the track] with survivors. Each day I live, I become a survivor. It felt good all the people there sending well wishes, prayers and good thoughts to us.

Today was a pretty good day, I love my family so much and worry so about [my daughter] Jamie. Came home at 10, one tired cancer patient."

18 days after her victorious walk, Annie's mother, the author of this journal, died. "But for one day, this event made her feel good like she could do something against cancer and we raised money which someday will find a cure for this disease," says Annie.
