Hi everyone - we are an 11 year Relay that has used the same Luminaria ceremony for that last few years. I am looking for a new approach to the Luminaria ceremony. Please let me know how you make your ceremony different and keep it fresh. Thanks - D

Timeshare Resales
My local Relay has used the same Luminaria ceremony for nearly 15 years!! Since the ACS has moved away from reading the names of survivors and those that lost their fight, I've decided to totally change our service.
At my college Relay and at another Relay I helped with, we decided to use songs, poems and prayers during a nearly hour-long service. The community Relays usually spend an hour reading names, so we decided this would better serve our participants.
The service I've used is themed "Hope" and involves the youth in the community. I've invited young members of the community to sing and speak in this event.
I also use songs that involve messages of hope.
If you're interested in any of the poems or songs I use, send me a message!!
(I also apologize - I hit "add new comment" and not "reply")

Hi, I hope this helps. I had a beautiful torch made, so every year we honor some one who lost there battle and ask the family to speak on there behalf and have a slide show with music that the family picks, I then hand the torch to the family member and light it. For the Luminaria lap they follow the bag pipers with the torch.
I will try and send a picture.

heyy,
at a relay that i participated in last year during the luminaria ceremony everyone gathered around the track and a very long piece of purple ribbon, it was actually many long pieces stapled together, was passed around. the ribbon had the names that appeared on the luminaria's. it was very cool and added a lot to the ceremony

Last year at the lumanaria ceremony at the end of it, we gathered around the track. We didn't have a purple ribbon, they held hands.

I would just post a pic, but I have the no-sharing of photos turned on. Feel free to browse the other 467 pictures.
Here are some suggestions for luminaria scripts that might be different than what you have used:
http://www.acsrelay.org/Darn_Good_Ideas/19-Luminaria_Ceremony_Script_By_Group_Example.doc
http://www.acsrelay.org/Darn_Good_Ideas/19-Luminaria_Ceremony_Script_Read_All_Names_Example.doc
The first has you read your survivor names as groups - "those who have lost a parent to cancer, etc.", the second for smaller relays lets you read all the names.
