Here is an old one I found in my files- Dear Sir or Madam: As the month of March begins, the American Cancer Society’s ________County unit is preparing for our annual Relay For Life, May 9- 10, 2003. The event will be held at the ______________with teams walking from 7pm to 7am. Funds raised from this event will support research, education, advocacy, and patient services. Three major portions of this event will include a Survivors Lap, Survivors Reception and Luminaria Ceremony. The Survivors’ Lap will honor all persons who have experienced cancer. A survivor is defined by anyone currently living with cancer as well as anyone who is cancer- free today. This group of special people will lead the event with a single lap around the track and then be joined by their families and eventually all teams. We would like to invite members of your congregation to participate if they so desire. The Survivors Reception is for cancer survivors to be honored for their courage of fighting cancer. This reception will take place at 6:00pm on May 9th. The Luminaria Ceremony is a particularly poignant and emotionally stirring segment of the evening. Sand filled sacks with candles, luminarias, will be placed around the track and lit when darkness falls. As the candles are lit, all the names of the luminarias are read to the audience. Luminarias, purchased for $10 and open to the public, are significant to families as they recognize those being honored or memorialized by the event. We would like to request that your church participate in our Relay For Life by mentioning these two aspects of our event in your Sunday bulletins throughout the rest of March through May 1st, 2003. Enclosed please find a luminaria form that may be duplicated by your church office. Please indicate that Survivors need to contact _____regarding their participation in this ceremony. Luminaria forms may be mailed to the Thank you for your assistance in sharing information about this event with your congregation. With your help, as theirs, we will surely find an end to this disease. Church Letter
Below is the text of a letter I have used with great for success over the past couple of years. We also have what we call the "church challange" as a word document I would be happy to send you in an e-mail... hope this helps!
Dear Pastor, As spiritual leaders, you are often among the first to know if members of your congregation are confronting cancer, through either their own diagnosis or that of a loved one. Before my mother lost her battle with cancer in 2003, I witnessed the peace that she gained through a rediscovered relationship with God. I listened as she spoke about the importance of her relationship with God as she lost her fight with Stage IV breast cancer. She drew strength from the Bible verse that stated, “I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me.” But she also knew what awaited her at the end of her battle, and she drew strength from that as well. An important aspect of your job is helping people find hope and strength through faith. At the American Cancer Society, we help people find strength and hope through the knowledge that they are not alone in their fight, whether they are a cancer patient or a caregiver. The Relay For Life is centered around celebrating cancer survivors and the loved ones who stood by them, and it is also a chance to remember those that have been claimed by the disease. Every Relay For Life features a victory lap for survivors and a chance for them to meet and celebrate with others who have been on a similar journey. For those still going through treatment, it offers something that cannot be reproduced in a laboratory: HOPE. It offers them hope because they realize they are not alone. And it offers them hope because scientists and researchers are not simply working to expand the life expectancies of cancer patients. They are working toward a cure. One out of every four Hoosiers will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lives. However, cancer affects more than just that one patient. It attacks loved ones, friends, neighbors, family members, everyone that cares about the patient. Enclosed is a brochure that details survivor activities taking place at Relays For Life in Northeast Indiana. If you know of a person or family in your congregation who is in need of the gift of hope, who may not realize that they are not facing cancer alone, please pass along the brochure. If you have any questions regarding Relay For Life or various services offered by the American Cancer Society, please contact me at (800) 509-7543. Recruiting churches
I'm not aware of a letter, but there's a "Why We Relay" statement from one of our local pastors you can point your community leaders to. See www.IWSRelay.org; about half-way down the home page. /Rick |
