Relay For Life of Second Life seems to have a life of it's own, even in advertising itself. There is so much energy for and discussion of RFL of SL that we have the pleasant issue of guiding that energy and discussion in the directions it is needed most. But, even with this energy and discussion we do find a need to advertise now and again.
We don't want to leave a soul out of the loop and especially right now when we are holding a contest to have a new donation kiosk designed for RFL of SL. The energy just won't carry the "news" far enough in our humble opinion, and to be awarded the honor of designing the look of this tool that actually funnels every cent donated in SL to ACS is a huge honor and an opportunity we want to offer to all in SL. So we looked to advertise. Maybe not the best idea we have ever had but certainly not the worse by far. We were offered and accepted an in-kind donation of advertising space for this contest from a generous businessman. We were so pleased with ourselves as we stood looking at the ad for the first time. We were HOT!
And then, about a week later, our ads were found next to some soft porn ads. NOW WE WERE WAY TO HOT! It's kinda funny I guess, but at the time we were shocked, speechless, and worried We didn't want to hurt the feelings or de-value the service the businessman had given us but we also couldn't leave ACS / Relay For Life of Second Life ads next to an ad for "Spankin' Sparky's Club" (you can imagine the ad's graphic) or loose the support of the SL citizens against this style ( a tall, three billboard high structure) of advertising. GOSH! We were in a pickle and it wasn't a dang sweet pickle either.
We did decide to removed our ad quickly, sincerely thanked the businessman, and are now praying we are none the worse for the wear as far as the SL citizens are concern, but - maybe, just maybe, for this Relay anyway, word of mouth advertising is the best advertising.
