Help! Our committee is a little divided over this issue. We have a local brewery who may become a corporate sponsor. We don't want to promote alcohol, but we don't want to turn down money. I say we take their money, but let them know their logo won't get put on the t-shirts or signs. Is this correct? What's the best way to handle this?
Thanks for all of the help! This clears it up quite a bit.

Alcohol on the shirt
I agree that, while alcohol can increase the risk of breast cancer, ACS does not say to abstain from it altogether. And while poor nutrition also increases your chances of developing cancer, we don't eat completely healthy food at Relay events. Tobacco has no positive side effects and there is a clear campaign to stop its usage. But not the same for alcohol. I would accept their sponsorship and welcome their logo.

Brewery Sponsor
I would tend to agree with Dean. I would accept their sponsorship and put the logo on the shirt. We have a few restaurants as sponsors that serve alcohol and would gladly accept a brewery as well. I think the exception would be if the name of the establishment was potentially offensive, but then we would not accept their money unless they agreed having their name or logo on the shirt would be inappropriate.
We had two funeral homes sponsor last year. One was an event sponsor and had their name on the shirt. The other sponsored our survivor area and chose to do so without having their name used at all.
Of course, a lot depends on the nature of your community and whether it would be a problem for you with the community.

Brewery Sponsor
A similar question came up at our event with regard to a beverage distributor having a brewery logo on its banner, and the ruling I got was that as long as it isn't a tobacco supplier or something that goes against the ACS mission, we can allow it. Alcohol is prohibited at the event because it's a family event that usually takes place on school property ... but it doesn't go against the ACS mission the way tobacco does. I'd put them on the shirt. Also, if you leave them off, that brings into question any business that serves alcohol ... taverns, clubs, restaurants. I also feel that if you won't publish their logo, you shouldn't accept the donation. Just my opinion.
