at our Relay, we cannot use candles (no fire allowed) and we also cannot use sand to weight the bags.  we will be using glow sticks to light the luminaria.

any ideas on an EASY way to weight these bags?   we cannot use tape to affix them to the track because that will leave residue.   we will probably have 2000 luminaria, so using rocks or anything of that sort is way beyond our capacity to acquire, store, or discard.

HELP!!

luminaria

What if you put the sand in baggies?  Would they let you do that?  We have a couple of Girl Scout troops get together a few weeks before the event and put sand in the baggies.  It keeps everything so clean.

If that won't work -try birdseed.  See if a local company will donate or underwrite it.  You can also put these in baggies too for easy clean-up.

no candles for luminaria

Have you thought of putting the sand in ziplock baggies?  That way there is no mess and easy clean up. The bags could be filled ahead of time or the day before by Girls Scouts, etc.

Cutting some 2x4's and placing them in the bag also works, and they you could burn them in a fireplace or a chimenea if you couldn't store them each year.

no candle or sand allowed

We had this same problem for the first time last year, as well.  We ended up putting rocks in those little french fry trays like they use at In & Out.  It didn't work very well, but we didn't have to store the rock because we were able to take them to someone's year who wanted rocks.  This year, I think we are going to pour cement in either those same type of trays or in dixie cups.  Storage is always an issue for any of this stuff, but if we have to store the same weight's worth of sand or cement, it all weighs the same and this might take up a little less space because it's more dense.

Everyone always complains about the glow sticks not being bright enough, so this year we are hoping to get those little led lights with the batteries and on/off switches.  They are not so wasteful because you can re-use them and not just toss them at the end of the Relay.  We are hoping to purchase them directly from the manufacturer, so they will be much cheaper than purchasing from a store and the replacement batteries are much cheaper that way, as well.  And although they will cost a bit more than the glow sticks the first year, any we are able to keep and re-use will just be an investment in next year.
