Savenger Hunt Idea

Hi Mindi,

I know one year our Relay had a scavenger hunt for the kids. The committee asked the team captains if anyone wanted to help be a part of the scavenger hunt. The committee provided a list of the types of cancer, nutrition & mission delivery moments. The captains selected which ones they want to represent. In turn the captains were given brochures to have at their campsite along with special stickers. (You can get the literature from your local ACS office.)

On the Day of Relay, the kids were given special cards with the name of the cancer, nutrition, etc on them. They had to go find the team booths that represented each of these items on their card. Once they found the booth, they were given literature on that topic as well as have a sticker put on their card showing they found the item. The first 5-10 kids who found everything and returned with their card filled with stickers as well as the matching literature were given a prize. The prize is up to you.

Scavenger hunt ideas

Hey there!

I haven't done a scavenger hunt but I think it would be a great idea to have people look for things like sunscreen....ribbon pins...healthy snacks...SURVIVORS!!!! haha.

Also I thought it was a great idea when I went to the first celebration on the hill. They gave everyone a "passport" that they would get stamped (or a sticker) at each tent after they completed an activity.

You could combine the two ideas and give each team sets of stickers and give participants an index card or something simple like that (or even a team roster) and have them stop by each tent to get their passport "stamped".

This would make sure that everyone is visiting the other teams and hopefully making new friends. :)

Good luck!

different type of scavenger hunt

The scavenger hunt we did was used to meet new people. We had a paper with about 15 questions. What is your favorite color? Why do you relay? What month were you born in? ETC. ETC. You would then write down your answers. The scavenger part was then you would have to find people with the same answer. Ex. favorite color GREEN , you would then have to go and ask other people what their favorite color was if they said green then you have them intial your paper and put down their team name. The winner would be first person back withintials from 15 differnt teams. It is a great way to meet other people and alot of fun!!!!

scavenger hunt ideas

Our A & E committee did one at our 2007 Relay and it was a hit!  People were asking to have another one later on the same night...  Make your "find lists" up prior to the event; do not make them all the same, but make sure each list has the same number of items to find, and include about the same amout of "easy" as "unusual" finds on each.   Include items on your lists that campsites might have:  flashlight, rubber band, chapstick, glass of ice, each of the cancer colors ribbons, bug repellant, etc.  Go by the registered team names to help you think of something unique each time might have. Then add "any denomination of cash/check" to each list.  Announce to have each team supply 4-6 players (make the number the same for all teams). Also announce that players will be coming to campsites and relayers on the track to ask for items.  Announce that all items on each list are to be returned except one, so encourage everyone to support the scavengers.

Give each player a pen or pencil.  Make sure they understand to note on their "find list" what campsite each item came from so it can be returned to it's owner, except the money.  However, be sure they make it clear to who-ever gives them the money that it will be kept by the scavenger team. (we found the youngsters did the best here, just put on that innocent, cute, "please help our team win" face and work it!)  Put a time limit on the hunt, (30-45 minutes depending on the size of your event) As each player collects their items, they return to you. At the end of the time, call all non-returned teams to return with their items.  Winners can be the first team back with all items, team with most correct items if no-one gets them all, or team who collected the most money.  Each team gets to add their money collected to their fundraising amount.

Vary this to work for you!  Doing it this way lets you not have to purchase special items for the hunt!  Good luck and keep up the Relay!

Idea for Relay Event

Mindi,

I'm sorry I don't have any ideas for a scavenger hunt. I'm pretty new to Relay and I'm trying to let people know about a project my husband and I have been involved with. I noticed that you are young and probably more receptive to knew ideas. I'm sixty and a retired fourth grade teacher so I've been missing being around the enthusiasm of young people.

I know Relays are always looking for unique and profitable ways to earn money to fight cancer. My husband, Tom, a cancer survivor, and I have made a feature length movie called "Expect A Miracle". Over 100 volunteers took nearly 3 years to complete it. We are offering the movie online for $19.99 and the ACS will receive $15.00 in return! We are most excited though about offering the film to local relays so they can use them as a different kind of fund raiser.
The best way to understand what I'm trying to explain is to check us out on the web at http://expectamiraclethemovie.com You can view the movie trailer and learn all about the story behind the story. Also, you can check out this link at MySpace: http://myspace.com/dvdmovie

Tom also won The American Cancer Society's song contest for their new website sharinghope.tv. The song is the title song from the movie. He has a wonderful presentation that he can give to local relay volunteers that wiil explain the project. The presentation includes the song, a chance to view the movie trailer and his story of the making of the movie and how his cancer diagnosis affected the making of the film.

Give us a look. I think you will be amazed at what 100 volunteers who are committed to defeating cancer can accomplish.

during relay

i want to do it during the relay as an activity for fun...

Scavenger Hunt

We did a scavenger hunt last  year that went over well.  We used a list with the letters A through Z and came us with things to find for each letter of the alphabet.  For example

D- a donation

P - something purple

S - the Signature of a survivor

C - A caregiver's story

Some letters were a bit challenging but we had a blast figuring out what to do and the participants had even more fun finding all the items.
