Hello. This is my 3rd year as Online Chair for our Relay. These past 2 years we have had trouble recruiting teams. Does anyone have ideas or where to get information on how to recruit teams and keep them Relaying. I have already looked in the library but was looking for things that have worked for other relays. Also, does anyone have a template to send to businesses to ask for teams/donations. Thanks! Melinda Relay For Life of Kane County (IL)

New Team Recruitment

You can find a list of the National Corporate Partner Teams who are already on board with Relay For Life.  With companies like Walmart, Best Buy, Target, Dress Barn - these should be the easy recruit targets.

Team Recruitment Tips

Work with your logistics committee also. For example, if the police or Sheriff's dept is supplying security, ask them to recruit a team or teams. Then have them challenge EMS and the Fire Dept.

Are you using scouts to fill up luminaria bags? Ask them to contribute a team, then get them to challenge other scout dens or packs to participate.

Have you asked the local Rotary club to prepare a pancake breakfast? Ask them for a team, then have them challenge, Kiwanis, Optomists, and other fraternal organizations.

If you recruit a Baptist team, ask them who they know over at other churches, not only Baptist, but Methodist, Catholic, etc. They probably play each other in softball and would love to compete against them again.

Then encourage competition among the teams by providing recognition to various categories of teams. Best Church Team, Best Fraternal Organization, Best Scouts, etc.

Another strategy: Ask your committee members to think about the other organizations they belong to. Then ask them to reach out to them for teams. For example, if a committee member is in Toastmasters or the local Public Relations Society of America, ask them to approach their clubs with both a request for a club team and to publicize it to others. For those people unwilling to form a team themselves, ask them to open the door for someone in their business or organization who might be.

Finally, here's a link to part one of a four-part blog post series on team recruitment.
