Leaving before Closing Ceremonies

Our event is 18 hours - beginning at 6 PM and ending at noon. Last year, it was in the upper 90's in early June, with high humidity, and we DID have too many leave before the closing ceremonies.

Our theme this year is "Once Upon a Cure - Help us find a Happy Ending" - our committees are offering Team rewards, using "cure cash" - essentially Monopoly-like cash that, depending on our rewards system (so much $ for attending Team Captain meetings, more with Team Members; so much for obtaining a Corp Sponsor, etc.)- the winning Team gets a pizza party, Plaque, Team and Individual Recognition - and to collect/win, Teams MUST be at the closing ceremonies (BIG plus cure-cash for them).

Don't know if this will work, but we're giving it a shot. Any other retention ideas would be appreciated!

Keep them there!

Don't let anyone leave!!!!  They won't want to come back if they're already tucked into their nice, soft, warm bed at home!  We heard several suggestions at Summit....  Give all team members a punch card and every hour (at some point during the hour that will vary through the night) they are called to a different location to get it punched.  Then, at the end of the night, they turn in their completed cards (ONLY the completed ones) and are entered into a drawing for some great prize that has been donated like a TV, game system, or dollar amount towards tuition at a local college.  Also, promoting the Fight Back ceremony early and getting someone from each of the teams involved in it will help keep teams on site until the end!

Closing ceremony

This is being addressed in 2008 with the Fight Back ceremony, which was introduced as part of the recent Relay U program. You can read about it in the Celebrate. Remember. Fight Back. Resource Guidebook (caution: it'll take a while to open this large PDF). Go to page 60 for the Fight Back ceremony details. (This and other guidebooks are available under the new Committee Chair Toolkit - note the link near the top of the right nav.)

As tired as folks are as the sun rises on the Relay track, no one is going to want to leave those hundreds of small CRFB flags on the field; Relayer pride will ensure they're carried for the last lap...
