Event Theme Ideas for '08
|
Hello Fellow Relayers! My name is Traci and I am the returning Event Chair to Clearwater Relay For Life '08. I hope everyone had as successful and great Relay season as we did here in the Sunshine State. The reason I am is here is to ask for help from fellow "RFL addicts" for ideas on different event themes. I am in the process of compiling a list of theme ideas (in additon ones suggested by teams) for our committee to consider at our upcoming meeting. After the committee picks their top 4 or 5 (and considers the logistics/possibilities) the Election '08 ballott will prepared for voting by everyone that attends our Early Bird meeting/picnic in September. FYI - here is a list of our themes for the last three (3) years: Sports; music (which could be any type of music or band/group) and last year we did "Changing the Channel on Cancer" - teams selected their favorite cable channel (or show) --- which was perfect since our event is held at a baseball stadium named after our local cable company, Bright House Networks. So you see my challenge - got some hard acts to follow. I must say we have a VERY creative and competitive group of Teams at Clearwater Relay and they are really into decorating their campsites according to the theme (sample: 18 foot juke box in centerfield - which won first prize; HGTV tv set - which included live flowers, the Travel & History channels & Food Network). So I want to be sure to give the teams a great challenge again this year! Thanks again for any ideas you can give me. I wish all of you the best and want to thank you for your hard work and dedication to ACS, RFL and the fight to find a cure! Remember, there is ALWAYS Hope! Traci Z. Holidays, Decades
My Relay is celebrating its 15th year in 2008 and we chose "Blast Into The Past" as our theme. We'll be celebrating the decades. Our teams are encouraged to pick a favorite decade. Our upcoming Relay Rally is themed around the decades, too. Sadly, I had a youth team ask what the 80s were like. (I was born in 1983.) None of the team members were born in the 80s! 1990 was the closest. They asked if "Grease" was in the 1980s. Ugh. Anyhow! Another theme I heard of tonight was "Holidays." Teams pick holidays and base their campsite around that. One team even went way out there and chose Rubber Ducky's Birthday (you know, Ernie from Sesame Street). I guess the little boy of the team captain is in love with Ernie and Rubber Ducky and it just so happens that Sesame Street has a birthday for Rubber Ducky some time in January. So teams can really be creative with that one. There's so many holidays, too. Veterans Day (would be good to honor the troops), July 4 (honor the country), Canada Day (honor Canada), Thanksgiving (that team could do a Thanksgiving in March fundraiser -- or any month), Easter (imagine all the fun with that!), Christmas (too easy), Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, Tax Day (imagine a team of accountants!!!!!), Cinco de Mayo, Black Friday (if anyone has a retail store team), Super Bowl (hey, it's a non-official holiday). There are soooo many! And there are so many websites that offer some of the most obscure holidays!! So teams could really get crazy!! If you have a team of school district support staff, they could do administrative assistant's day team. haha! A bunch of married couples could do Valentine's Day. oooo, and there's Leap Day! That would be fun! If you have a local Froggy radio station, they could be that team! OK, I need to stop. Before I know it, I'll have run through the entire year (all 366 days this year). Hope this helps! Theme ideas
Last year we used "Superheroes" stolen from Summit. Because we were a new event, we did not put as much focus on the theme as we could/should have. We didn't do a good job of explaining or using it and the theme really didn't add anything to our Relay. Now that we have a better idea of what it takes to get a Relay off the ground and our committee has multiplied, we wanted a theme that brought something to the table but that could be very generic or completely outlandish depending on how much each team wanted to do with it. We do not have a Mission Delivery chair so we wanted a theme that would assign Mission D to the teams. We tossed around a few ideas and adopted the theme, "Color A Cure." Each team will select a color which represents a type of cancer and provide information about it at their campsites. We'll do a scavenger hunt/trivia game of cancer facts, prevention, early warning signs, etc, and if a person visits each campsite they can find all of the answers. We are very excited and when we presented it to our captains last week, they seemed enthusiastic as well. I really think the theme possibilities are only limited by the imagination. Our Relay is 4-1/2 months away and I'm already thinking about themes for 2009! Theme
Hello Traci. My name is Cari Wells. I am the chair for the 2008 Whitley County, Indiana Relay for Life. This year our theme is "Seasons of Hope". We are hoping to incorporate all seasons and holiday celebrations throughout the year. For instance, Halloween hour, there will be trick or treating from campsite to campsite and during Easter hour, an Easter egg hunt, etc. We're looking forward to having a great time with decorating as well. I know we've had some teams struggle with the campsite judging but thought a holiday theme would be an easy way to get everyone involved without having to spend extra cash on decorations. Good Luck and if anyone has ideas for the kickoff, let me know. Happy New Year! Theme Ideas
Our event (Wilson County in Tennesse) has had some good themes the last couple of years. First we had Relay Around the World and last year was Time for a Cure (everyone chose a time/period). Last year was fun...some people chose seasons, some people chose decades...some people even chose "time" like tea time, etc....it was really interesting. For this year, I'm suggesting "Relay Your Way" which will be a free-for-all and Once Upon a Cure. I like the SuperHero theme. You could change it to "Come here a Zero, Leave a Hero." Theme
Hi Traci, Our 2007 theme was "Carrying a Torch for the Cure!" - an Olympic-type theme. Teams selected countries to represent; we had a "Parade of Teams" like the parade of nations; we handed out medals; etc. Even designed a logo just for our 2007 Relay. 2008 is our 10th Annual Relay and we're thinking we'll probably go with some kind of movie / Oscars theme. Seems appropriate. Red carpet for the survivors ... maybe I'll even try to find someone to donate some of those cool spotlights they have at movie premiers. Etc. Haven't come up with a good "catch phrase" I like yet, though. At any rate good luck. And if anyone has additional movie type ideas (OTHER than the ones on the "standard" list I've seen many times) I would welcome them! Vicki Santos Event Chair, Longmont Colorado - Pacesetter Relay! Here are some event theme ideas...
Butterfly Indian Legend
If anyone desires a wish to come true they must first Capture a butterfly and whisper that wish to it.
Since a butterfly can make no sound, the butterfly can not reveal The wish to anyone but the Great Spirit who sees and hears all.
In gratitude for giving the beautiful butterfly its freedom, The Great Spirit will always grant the wish.
So, according to legend, by making a wish and giving the butterfly its freedom, The wish will be taken to the heavens to be granted”
And one way to make your event theme even more fun is to announce it at your kickoff – here is a great idea from Rock4aCure: “We save our theme announcement for kick off! Our committee dresses in character for whatever the theme is. Last year was the Fabulous 50's, and we were the pink ladies, and got pink lady jackets, and pony tails, white sneaks, the boys were the t-birds, wore jeans, white tee rolled up, greased hair, and work tbird jackets. We served food of the era white castle cheesebugers, and floats we had a relay store, registration table, and then we had speakers and introduced our committee. We did it for the first time on a friday night, and we got a great turn out! We advertised a soc hop type theme, and played 50's music. It was alot of fun!!! The kids were great, they got up and sang, and we even had elvis perform too!! ELVIS was in the building!! :)” (from http://www.relayforlife.org)
Hope this helps!
Relay Theme
Hi Traci - Brenda and I are co-chairs (1st time) for the Relay for Life of Burleson, 08 & 09. I am in my 7th year of Relay, Brenda is in her 3rd. I don't think that we have ever had a theme until last year - Rockin' Relay (a 50's theme). This year our theme is Mardis Gras - Celebrate Life! We had a lot of complaints last year about the Luminaria ceremony being too long and depressing - we are committed to fixing that! Brenda and I are both survivors, so we have a special desire to 'do it right', so to speak. We are going to have the local High School jazz band lead us off on the survivor lap, give beads to the care givers, etc. It will be fun! By the way, I love that International idea - we might be using that next year!!! Trish S., Event Co-Chair, Relay for Life of Burleson, TX theme
Hi Traci! My name is Jennifer and this year our theme was...Around the World, Passport to Hope! Each team came up with the country they wanted to represent and decorated their campsites accordingly. Our theme for 08 is Cruisin' for a Cure. I'm really excited about this one, too! Just an idea... theme

Thanks Kris for the great idea - have to say that is the first time i have heard of that one. By the way, do you remember where you read abut "superheroes"? Just curious - always like to read and get new info/ideas. Thanks again for responding to my post - I really appreciate it. Take care & Happy Relaying. SuperHeroes Theme
Kris & Traci, I know that the Mid-South Division theme for the 2007 was SuperHeroes. I don't know if it was a national or division thing but the slogan was... Come a Hero, Leave a SuperHero and we had all kinds of heroes at our Relay some were well known some were tied into the campsite theme...we had a person dressed as a Lifesaver Candy Roll for their hero. Their team name was the Lifesavers. In Relay Spirit, Cheri Theme
We are pretty sure we're stealing our Summit's theme - the Wizard of Oz - Follow the Yellow Brick Road to a Cure, and my favorite part - "There's no place like HOPE" I am excited about all of the fun ways we will use it, including using your courage, heart and brains to find a cure. Good luck! Heather Alvey Wizard
Thanks Heather for the theme idea. I must say that is the first time i have heard that one. I am sure your teams will have lots of fun with it. What was your event's theme last year? Just wondering - always like to hear different ideas. Hope to hear from you again some time. Take care & thanks again. Happy Relaying! Themes!
Hi Tracy! I am the event chair for LaGrange Co. Indiana. Last year we did holidays "Take A Holiday from Cancer", it worked out great! At our kickoff we had a game were teams choose there holidays, so that they did not all do the same one, it worked out really well. This year we are going hollywood, Lights, Camera....Take Action! I have heard a lot of good things about Around the World, and a lot of people like Disney, Cereal brands, Sports "Relay...Just Do it!" There are just so many to choose from! Good Luck! Thanks Suzanne
Hello. Thanks Suzanne for the ideas. Yes, I have "celebrations" and movie/hollywood theme on our suggested list. Definitely seem like those are popular, have great potential and would be lots of fun for everyone. Must say though - you are the first to tell me about "cereals". How does that and the Disney one work? Thanks again for responding. Hope to chat with you again some time soon. Take care & best of luck with your Relay! Tracy,
I am the chair for
Tracy, I am the chair for the East Orlando Relay and our them this year is " Relay around the world". The teams will pick a country/region( one team is the "Carribbean- so they are going all out with the pirates) another is USA( which will be all decked out in red, white and blue and have the statue of liberty and Uncle Sam)..... Thanks
....so much for the suggestion. I like the "Relay Around the World" theme as well, and as matter of fact have a suggestion of International on my list of themes to present to the Committee. (I even have my choice for a country for our Committee Team IF that is the big winner when the teams vote at Early Bird). So since you are also in Florida did you attend the Team Summitt in Orlando on August 17th & 18th? If so, we probably passed each other in the hall or in the Relay store, etc. All I know is I will never forget Ellen telling us her story and will tell her sotry to inspire others, as well as her strength for inspiration whenever I am having a rough day (which truly can not compare to hers). She is an amazing woman and I wish her nothing but peace in her life. Thanks again for responding to my post - (which was my first). Take care & keep in touch! Have a great evening & Happy Relaying! |
