Losing my sister, who was pregnant at the time of her diagnosis with melanoma, was a devastating experience for my family. Shortly after her passing, a neighbor asked me to tell my story during our local Relay’s luminaria Ceremony of Hope.

I’d known about the Relay in my town for years, but had paid little attention. I had cared for those around me who’d fought cancer, but my sister’s death gave me the will to finally take action. I was desperate for a way to connect with Debbie’s memory, so I agreed to share our story. In doing so, I found a community ready to embrace me as I grieved that night.

I Relay every year to help others find healing, too, so that we can REMEMBER all those we’ve lost.
