The theme for our event this year is "Atwater Goes to the Movies."  My team and I have been talking about all the different possibilities.  Here's one idea we are leaning towards right now.

Instead of choosing a movie to set the theme for our campsite we are thinking of creating a "Snack Bar."  The theater always has a snack bar.

Here's where it gets interesting.  Our mission delivery activity is going to be based on nutrition.  We help people create their own trail mix while talking and educating on the necessity of healthy eating.  The problem!  The snack bar at any theater is not very healthy.  At the snack bar we would sell items like popcorn, candy, soda, energy drinks, etc.  Since water will be of abundance at the event, we will not be selling any of it.  We are also considering selling virgin drinks, such as margaritas, dacquaris, etc.  How can I tie all this together without sending a mixed message?

Does anyone have any ideas on how to decorate the campsite?  I have my vision, but would like to hear the ideas of others.

Suggestions for your theme...

My suggestion would be to do the old black and white, maybe drive in theatre, look.  You could run red carpets along the front of your tents, have a little cd player playing the old time music from the movies that were just sound and park some older cars from a car show out in front of a big projection screen where you could have a movie like Casablanca playing.  For the "snack bar" have your first tent set up with some green tea, cranberry juice, apple juice, and drinks like that, your next tent with no salt/no butter popcorn but with the seasoning provided on the table and some "I Can't Believe it's Not Butter" spray in a can of ice, serve it in little brown paper bags.  The next tent could serve some all turkey hot dogs with no or low fat toppings, the next serving no salt nachos with salsa instead of cheese, and so on.  Blow up clip art of old time movie reels and images and post them around the campsite.  Also get the teams to create their own movie posters that could be displayed at their tents or around the site.  See if you can borrow some line dividers, you know the metal poles with the ropes, from a movie theatre near you and set them up.  When teams sell items, have them give tickets (to look like movie tickets) to the buyer and have a raffle at the end of the night, displaying the winner's name up on the big screen like credits.  Anyway, just some ideas.  Hope they help.  Good luck and I really like the idea.  I don't know where you are located, but your best place for your event sounds like a drive in theatre.

It has no bounds, it has no means, it has no direction... let's set the bounds, let's give it it's means, and let's give it direction right out the door... It's time to cure cancer!

Healthy Snacks

I think it is important that you make it clear the you are the "anti-snack bar".  I think people would love it!  Get an air popper and a bunch of loose popcorn and serve that instead of butter flavored.  Have some dried fruit on hand to mix in.  Have fresh fruit to sell.Hershey's has some 100 calorie packs of trail mixes, with cereal, small Hershey's kisses, peanut butter chips.

There is a ton of stuff you can do without becoming your very own movie theater snackbar.

If you know anyone on Weight Watchers, the website has literally THOUSANDS of ideas on snacking.  www.weightwatchers.com

Healthy Snacks Reply

Thanks for your ideas.  I do not want to be called the "Anti-Snack Bar" simply because of its negative connotation.  We can simply be the "Snack Bar" only offering healthy choices.  I want to stay away from the word "healthy" because of the association made with healthy foods.  Because our mission delivery activity will include trail mix, we will not be selling any of it.  It will all be given away for free.  I am concerned by providing only healthy snacks our sales will not be very high.  How can I offer healthy choices without negatively impacting sales?

Sales vs. Healthy

I'd say that I'd go with your healthy snacks ideas and keep the "Snack Bar" name... that sounds good. Love your idea - it is great!

And if sales are a little lower for being healthy, so be it! We have to role model the right choices every moment or it slips away from us. Can't raise money to fight cancer selling cigarettes at Relay either even if that would be a moneymaker.

I have always called this "Never Violate the Spirit Of Relay"... :)

That being said - here are a few ideas:

Cancer Crusaders Snack Bar

Satisfying Slimming Snack Shack (SSSS) ..... Have a snake for your logo.

Movie Candy Against Cancer

hope this helps :)
