Hi! This is my second RFL this year and I am serving as a team captain and also on the executive committee for the event as the awards chairperson. I'm looking for some new award ideas to help spice up the event more this year. Any ideas would be great! Thanks, Dawn in Ohio
This year our theme is "Movies in the Park" so I have our closing awards ceremony be a take on the Oscars - I'm still figuring out what the actual award will be.
Some examples are: - Best Picture: highest team fundraiser - Best Actor/Actress: highest individual fundraiser - Best Director: teams nominate their captains and the "Academy" (exec. committee members) selects the most involved one. - Best Art Direction (category for set design): Camp Site winner
I'm also having other categories such as Best Animated Short as an award for an art competition being held in the kid's section of the event.
I would like to include such categories as "rookie team of the year" or "best team spirit", but I wouldn't know how to make those into Oscar categories...

We were fortunate this past year to secure the Henderson school system and have mini Relays in each school. This year, we've developed an award to recognize the school that utilizes the kit the best and raises the most income.
Our chair purchased the Relay For Life tennis shoes and mounted them individually on trophy bases. The left shoe has a plaque that says "Don't get LEFT behind" and will be used at each school during their kickoff campaign. The right shoe will be the award presented to the winning school at our Opening Ceremony during Relay.

The Gordy Awards
We have an event here in southern Illinois that does Gordy Awards, which are in honor of the founder of Relay, Dr. Gordy Klatt. They got some old sneakers donated, preferably high tops, from the local Goodwill store. They painted them purple, decorated them with glitter, and various craft store doo-dads and gave them out for most spirit, best campsite, etc.
The award categories are your typical categories, but the award itself is "solely" unique! :o)

Here are some award ideas:
Best Decorated Overall - based on creativity, theme and decorations related to the theme.
Best Decorated Campsite for Cancer Control Theme: based on interpretation of theme, creativity, and decorations.
Team Spirit Award - based on attendance at Opening, Luminaria & Closing Ceremonies, demonstrated Team spirit through excitement and team participation of all Relay events.
Rookie Team of the Relay (First Year Teams Only) - based on decorations, food, theme interpretation and cancer control activities.
Most Original Campsite - based on originality in theme and campsite decorations.
Best Food - based on taste, appearance, and smell.
Healthiest Food (for events with food booths) - based on taste, appearance, smell and the healthy aspects of the food.
Morning Prizes/Ceremonies/Awards – Have some awards early in the morning that people must be present for – such as an an auction, the Kid's Walk with great Kids’ prizes, a celebrity to do closing ceremonies, etc.
