Hello, newbie here...Hope it isn't too much trouble but I could use some help. I'd like to get involved in Relay For Life but I'm not sure in which capacity I'd be able to participate due to time and caregiving constraints. My Dad was diagnosed with Metastatic Prostate cancer about 2 years ago and it seems there is no cure, right now we just have to buy him as much time as possible with hormone therapy, but who knows how long that will last. To add to it I just took my Grandmother to her doctor today and found out that she has Breast cancer. We don't know yet if it's spread to the lymph nodes or what, we just know she has 2 masses in one breast and a possible mass in the other. At the moment I don't know which end is up and I find myself asking what our family has done to deserve this. So far there's been no answer. Anyway...enough about our problems. I know I could make a simple donation (once I can afford to), but to me it really seems like there's more to be done. Thank you for your help.

Relay

My condolences on your situartion.  Relay is the Way.  The national focus this year is Celebrate - Remember - Fight Back!  It looks as though you are ready to fight back.  We have so much to celebrate.  Each year there are improvements in the treatment and prevention of cancer.  Each year we are now seeing the cancer death rate drop.  We are winning the war on cancer!  But we also remember.  We remember the struggles that the victims of cancer and their loved ones endure.  We remember those that have lost their battle with cancer.  Some may sit back is quiet desperation, in submissive acceptance of the inevitable, but I am mad as hell and I'm not taking it anymore.  I will FIGHT BACK!  This website is an excellent resource for you to learn more on how get involved.  Anyone can write a check, but your involvement, no matter how limited, is much more important.  You can serve on the committee, be a team captain or be a team member.  There are many other way you can fight back, but these are the primary ones.  Once you find your nearest Relay, ask what position on the committe would best suit you.  Some positions require a lot of time, and some not so much.  There is something you can do to make a difference.  No burden is too heavy when we all lift together.

I'm so sorry to hear about your father and grandmother. Remember, if you or they need support you can always call the ACS at 1.800.ACS.2345 or go the the website www.cancer.org.

I think the simplest thing for you to do is find your local Relay and sign up as an individual. This way, you can ask your friends for donations and they can submit them online. If you wish to join an existing team, you can do that as well.

To sign up as an individual:

  1. Follow this link,
  2. Enter your zip code and select "find events"
  3. Select the hyper-linked name of the closest event (this will take you to the Event's fundraising site)
  4. Select the "sign up" link in the left hand side-bar listed under the "get involved" banner.
  5. Agree to the waiver
  6. Select the Join as an Individual radio button, and
  7. fill out the information requested

Whatever you do will be appreciated so don't add any extra stress to your life. Remember, take care of yourself first.

Donations cheerfully excepted.
