Can somebody just make a checklist of all the things I need to do to get one of these going?
I'm going to assume I these:
-Sponsers
-People

I'll first point you to a post about this very topic. Read Ramesh's response to give you an overview. Then visit the Training Room. Other resources are the Relay Library and the Team Development Training section.
To find the ACS office near you, follow this link and enter your zip code. On the left side of the page you should find the address and phone number of the closest office to you.

As Trish said, great idea that you have! I would also follow the following link and verify what the closest Relay For Life to you is, and then contact your local office by following the link Trish provided to talk about your idea of starting an event.
You have listed a couple of very important things that you need to start. But first things first - call your local office and talk to them about your interest in starting an event. That will get the ball rolling!
